Board of Visitors - William C. Bowes
Summary
William C. Bowes is a retired Vice Admiral, an experienced industry executive, and a highly decorated combat pilot. He retired from Northrop Grumman in 2003 and is now working as an aerospace consultant. He has extensive experience in both the government and industry in executive leadership and program management.
As a Vice Admiral he served as Commander of the Naval Air Systems Command, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition (RDA), and the Acting Assistant Secretary of the Navy for RDA.
Professional Experience
In September 1996, Bowes joined Hughes Electronics as a corporate vice president and the deputy general manager of Hughes Aircraft Company's $2.5 Billion Sensors and Communications Systems Segment. Shortly after Raytheon acquired Hughes, he joined Litton Industries and held the positions of Vice President for Strategic Planning on the corporate staff, and then Vice President of Programs Management at Litton's Integrated Systems Division. After Northrop Grumman acquired Litton, he was led one of the three business units within the newly formed Navigation Systems Division.
Professional Affiliations
Mr. Bowes serves on the Board of Directors of Innovative Solutions and Support, the Board of Visitors for the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University and has served on the Board of Trustees for the Association of Unmanned Vehicles Systems International and on the Board of Directors for the Defense Systems Management College Alumni Association. He is a fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots (SETP) and has received numerous awards during his career including the SETP Jimmy Doolittle Award for executive leadership in aerospace, the AIAA National Quality Management Award, the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the two Distinguished Service Medals, three Legions of Merit, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, thirty-six Air Medals, eight Navy Commendation Medals, and numerous other awards and campaign medals.
Education
Mr. Bowes holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Idaho, a master's degree in systems acquisition management from the Navy Post Graduate School, and he is a graduate of the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School. He has completed executive management courses at Harvard Business School, The Wharton School, University of Chicago Graduate Business School and the UCLA Anderson School.
