As chief operating officer of the SEI, Clyde Chittister directs internal operations and execution of the SEI’s annual operating plan and technical program. Five technical programs fall within Mr. Chittister’s purview, addressing engineering process, architecture, interoperability, acquisition, and security and how they relate to software-intensive systems. The growing SEI R&D budget today exceeds $80M (US) annually.
Since coming to the SEI in 1985, Chittister has served in several management positions. He initiated and managed the Ada-based Software Engineering, Systems, and Software Risk Management Programs. He also managed the Industry Sector, which was responsible for overseeing SEI relationships with industry clients.
Chittister has more than 29 years of experience in software and systems engineering. He began his career in the field of real-time process-control systems, working on the design, implementation, and maintenance of automated control systems for the transportation and building-automation industries. He then advanced through several managerial positions, including management of software development, program management, corporate research and development, and division-level management. In these capacities, Chittister has developed and implemented technical and business strategies for both the U.S. and international markets.
A senior member of The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers who serves as a vice chair of the Technical Committee on Software Engineering, Chittister is the author of a number of published articles on software acquisition, risk management, and terrorism and information technology.
