About Vancouver

Once standing as Fort Vancouver, a final stop on the Oregon Trail, the town of Vancouver has transformed into one of Washington’s most cherished communities. Located across the river from Portland, Oregon, Vancouver offers Southwest Washington an eclectic joining of old and new. Rightfully claiming both the amenities of a large city and the charm and nuances of a small town, Vancouver entertains visitors both near and far.

It’s situated amongst some of the nation’s premier outdoors life. With Mount St. Helens to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the Cascade Mountains to the east, there’s plenty to do outside. Meanwhile, a stroll through downtown will take you past quaint boutiques, gorgeous art galleries, and unique dining experiences.

Fall in Vancouver is sure to display the sights of the seasons, and with mild temperatures. The average high for this time of year is around 64 degrees (F) and the average low temperatures are around 43 degrees (F).

Things to Do and See

Esther Short Park, Washington state’s oldest public square, is within a one-block walk of the Hilton Vancouver. The square houses the famous Salmon Run Clock & Bell Tower and Glockenspiel. The bells were cast in the Netherlands and shipped in for this magnificent public artwork.

Also found within just a few blocks of the hotel are the Vancouver Famers Market, art galleries, the Clark County Historical Museum, antique shops and boutiques, and a movie theatre -- or take a stroll along the scenic Columbia River. Local restaurants boast “Northwest” cuisine, and you can also find Italian, Mexican, Steak and Seafood houses all in downtown Vancouver. The Southwest Washington Visitor’s Bureau has great dining and attraction suggestions for out-of-towners.

History buffs will also enjoy Officers’ Row in the Historic Reserve area of town. This tree-lined boulevard features stately homes of soldiers and families of the Vancouver Barracks. Dating as far back as the mid-1800s, the street features former residencies of President Ulysses S. Grant, General George C. Marshall, and General Oliver Otis Howard. Vancouver is also home to the nation’s oldest operational airport, Pearson Field, which now houses the Pearson Air Museum.

Don’t miss the chance to enjoy the outdoors! You can enjoy the coast with a stroll, jog, bike or run on the Waterfront Renaissance Trail (4 mi. long). The trail runs right from Downtown, through two parks, and parallel to the Columbia River. For more parks and trails in the area, visit the city of Vancouver’s website.

For more information on things to do in and around Vancouver, see the Southwest Washington Convention and Visitors Bureau website. And with Portland, Oregon only a short distance from Vancouver, you may also find fun and interesting things to do during your stay at TravelPortland.com.

Enjoy your stay in the Pacific Northwest!
