Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) offers significant potential for your organization to leverage its investments in legacy systems—by providing a modern interface to existing capabilities and exposing legacy functionality to a greater number of users.
The SOA Migration, Adoption and Reuse Technique (SMART) helps organizations to make better decisions on their path to SOA adoption. To guide your organization through adopting this technique, you now can receive through this site the SMART materials developed by the SEI. No fee is involved. From the SMART family of techniques you can choose those that you find appropriate for your organization.

SMART is a family of techniques that will help your organization
- determine if SOA adoption is a feasible option and if it is, to create a high-level adoption strategy
- understand a target SOA environment in detail, including associated costs and risks of migrating to that environment
- understand a complete service-oriented system—services, consumers, environment—including risk and cost data
- select a pilot project that includes a migration strategy with an understanding of costs and risks involved
- select and create services from its systems portfolio
YOUR ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS
Migrating to SOA can present challenges. You will find the SMART materials helpful if any of the following apply to your situation:
- SOA seems to be a valid option but your organization is not completely convinced.
- SOA adoption has been mandated and your organization does not know where to start.
- Your organization needs to fit into an existing SOA environment but it is not sure how.
- Your organization wants to provide services in an SOA environment but it does not know what services it should provide to service consumers.
- Your organization wants to expose functionality from selected legacy systems in an SOA environment but does not understand the implications of this migration.
- Your organization wants to fully migrate a set of systems to an SOA environment and is looking for an understanding of the proper path for migration.
