Become an SEI-Certified Implementing Goal-Driven Measurement Instructor

Better analysis, better decisions

Software Engineering Measurement and Analysis (SEMA) practices help an organization develop and evolve useful measurement and analysis practices. Organizations that have developed measurement capabilities can leverage that investment by learning to better analyze the data they collect and make more informed business decisions.

An Implementing Goal-Driven Measurement (IGDM) Instructor introduces the methods for identifying and defining indicators (graphical displays) and measures that directly support an organization’s business goals related to product development, process improvement, and project management.

As an SEI-Certified IGDM Instructor, you'll reap the rewards of professional recognition through certification , and you’ll also add value to your organization. IGDM Instructors contribute standard practices to increase efficiency and support the business goals within their organizations by delivering methods for identifying and defining indicators and measures that directly support product development, process improvement, and project management.

4 Commit to the SEI Code of Professional Conduct

Commit to the SEI Code of Professional Conduct for SEI Services by completing and submitting the form located at http://www.sei.cmu.edu/partners/files/copc_form_indiv.pdf.

5 Show Your Skills

Demonstrate your understanding of the methodology and concepts used in the IGDM course by completing exercises that test your knowledge of the subject matter.

Send your completed worksheets to certification-info@sei.cmu.edu.

All documents are evaluated by SEI personnel. If you submit below-average work, the SEI will inform you of remediation steps. If your exercises are approved, you will be invited to attend the Train-the-Trainer course.

6 Complete the Train-the Trainer (TTT) Course

During the TTT course, you must demonstrate competency in all performance objectives associated with the course. In particular, you should be prepared to deliver any of the modules from the IGDM course and to analyze and provide feedback to solutions of the course exercises. The leaders of the TTT course will evaluate your performance using a checklist of expected competencies.

If your performance in the TTT course is satisfactory, you will be required to conduct a live course delivery for assessment by the SEI.

If your performance in the TTT course is deficient, the SEI will either (at the SEI’s sole discretion) (1) recommend appropriate remedial activities that must be completed to continue with the qualification process, or (2) disqualify the candidate with no opportunity for remediation.

7 Conduct a Live Course Delivery for Assessment

Within 12 months of completing the TTT course, you must deliver the Implementing Goal-Driven Measurement course for a performance assessment by the SEI. Please review the performance assessment details [pdf]. During the assessment, you must demonstrate competency in all performance objectives associated with the course delivery. The SEI will use a checklist of competencies to assess your performance.

The SEI will observe up to two candidates per offering, provided that the SEI is informed prior to the offering. Your sponsoring SEI Partner determines the location of the course offering and reimburses the SEI for daily effort and actual travel expenses when the SEI-authorized observer performs the observation.

The observer will provide you with feedback at the conclusion of the observation. You will receive your performance assessment results within 2-3 weeks.

8 Get Your Certification

SEI-Certified IGDM Instructors will receive a welcome kit that contains a certification diploma and other information about SEI Certification.

If your observation was unsatisfactory, the SEI will provide you with feedback and, if necessary, steps for remediation. Any additional SEI support for remedial work will be billed in accordance with your sponsoring SEI Partner’s license agreemen.

9 Keep Your Certification Up to Date

Your IGDM certification is valid for a period of three (3) years from the award date. After that time, the SEI requires that you renew your certification according to the IGDM Instructor Certification Renewal Requirements.
