Requirements for Renewing Your IGDM Instructor Certification

By earning the IGDM Instructor certification, you have received a prestigious designation in the measurement and analysis field. This achievement recognizes both your current skills and your commitment to an ongoing learning process. In order to qualify for renewal of your certification, you must demonstrate an ongoing commitment to professional growth and personal development.

Your IGDM certification is valid for a period of three years from the award date. The SEI requires you to renew your certification in order to keep up with changing technology. Renewal demonstrates that you are engaged in professional practice, participating in professional growth activities, and expanding your skills to adapt to an ever-changing technical environment.

Certification Renewal Requirements

To maintain certification to teach the Implementing Goal-Driven Measurement course, SEI-Certified IGDM Instructors must complete the following activities within a renewal cycle of three years based on the last day of the anniversary month:

  • Instruct five total courses over the three-year period
Note: Each instructor must instruct   a minimum of one course within 12 months during the period.
  • Provide the SEI with copies of all attendee lists and   course evaluations for courses taught within the three-year period
  • Complete the SEMA IGDM Instructor Renewal Log to provide the SEI with a summary of professional development activities that include at least one of each of the following:

    • Attendance or presentation at a measurement conference or seminar.
    • Teaching courses on measurement-related topics other than the igdm course.
    • Continuing professional education by attending a course that contributes to in-depth knowledge in software engineering and/or measurement provided by a college, university, seminar provider, or workshop.
  • Successfully complete any SEI-required course upgrades, workshops, or exams related to measurement topics, not to exceed one per year.
  • Accept and use upgraded materials when available.

Recordkeeping and Documentation

Each IGDM Instructor must maintain a Certification Renewal Log that lists activities. It is important that the log contain specific data to accurately identify the submitted activity. The log, supporting documentation, and renewal fee should be sent to the SEI, and postmarked 30 days prior to the end of the renewal cycle. The SEI may request clarification of data to check the log and listed activities. All logs and supporting documentation will be kept on file at the SEI and will not be returned to the members.

We encourage all IGDM instructors to keep up with your activities during your renewal cycle so that records will be accurate and up to date. The Renewal Log contains fields for the individual to complete. The required information includes

  • Date of Activity – Include day, month, and year of the activity. If the activity will be more that one day, include the series of dates for the activity.
  • Title of Course/Activity – Include enough detail of the   activity to identify the category in which the credit is earned.
  • Activity Provider – Include full name of activity   provider.
  • Subject Matter – Identify the topics, subject matter,   or areas of discussion for the activity.

Insufficient Renewal Activity

The SEI Certification Renewal program may find that items in a submitted activity log do not fully meet the renewal criteria. If a certification renewal log is rejected, the IGDM Instructor will be notified and will be given 60 days from the notification date to correct the discrepancy.

Audit Program

The Certification Program Manager will randomly audit a percentage of submitted logs each year. This will ensure that the quality of activities submitted continue to meet certification program requirements. IGDM Instructors selected for an audit will be notified by letter and may be asked to supply additional information or supporting documentation.

Reinstatement for Lapsed Certifications

SEI Partner Instructors who allow their certification to lapse must do one or more of the following to reinstate their certification:

  • attend training designated by the SEI
  • be re-observed as they deliver the course

This list is not all-inclusive of the actions that the SEI can require you to perform in order to reinstate your certification.

Better analysis, better decisions

Software Engineering Measurement and Analysis (SEMA) practices help an organization develop and evolve useful measurement and analysis practices. Organizations that have developed measurement capabilities can leverage that investment by learning to better analyze the data they collect and make more informed business decisions.
