The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) CERT Program is conducting a job analysis study of those in the cyber security profession. The job analysis survey will be used to define the role and responsibilities of a cyber security incident hander or incident responder professional. The job analysis study will also provide the basis for determining the content and structure of future cyber based education, skills training, and credentialing programs in support of the profession.
The first phase of the job analysis study involved a panel of experienced cyber security professionals who identified the essential domains and tasks. Now we are ready to validate these findings through a survey of the professionals in the practice. The purpose of the survey is to solicit feedback from cyber security professionals about the domains and tasks developed by the panel. A cyber security professional is someone who is responsible for responding to cyber security incidents and threats. Those who work in the following cyber security roles are invited to participate:
incident handling and incident responder professionals
incident response team (CSIRT) members and technical staff
system and network administrators with cyber security incident handling experience
incident handling educators
computer security technical staff
information security officers
IT systems operations and maintenance professionals
information assurance systems security officers
If you meet one (or more) of the above descriptions and wish to participate in the validation survey, please contact SEI Certification at certification-info@sei.cmu.edu by November 11, 2009.
We encourage you to forward this to others in your network who you think might fit the description(s) above and might be interested in participating. It is critically important for as many cyber security professionals as possible to participate in the survey, since the data will have far-reaching significance; the more professionals we can get actively involved in the process, the better the final product will be! All responses are kept confidential, and your individual responses will not be released. All results will be reported as aggregates.
Those who participate in the survey and follow-up SEI-Certified Computer Security Incident Handler BETA certification examination will be eligible for a discount on their certification exam and fees for the first three-year period. Please email inquiries and responses to this opportunity to SEI Certification at certification-info@sei.cmu.edu.

In case you missed it, a recent article published by Federal Computer Weekly highlights the SEI CERT Computer Security Incident Handler certification as a key credential supporting the incident responder role for military, civilian, and contract personnel who handle information assurance for US DoD systems. http://fcw.com/Articles/2009/06/22/feat-cybersecurity-training-table-info.aspx.
The SEI CERT Computer Security Incident Handler program will be making some very exciting changes over the next year to enhance your certification program. Some of the coming improvements are structural in nature and will provide superior capabilities for entry and renewal processing. We now have the capability to recognize our CSIH’ers by including them in a new directory of certified individuals on the CERT website. SEI professionals have found this reference tool to be extremely useful to broaden their presence in their field of expertise. Similar SEI pages are currently available to help promote and recognize SEI credential-holders from other domains.
DoD Accreditation
A major enhancement is the accreditation of the CERT CSIH certification to qualify for the U.S. Department of Defense 8570.01-M Information Workforce Improvement. Full- or part-time military service members, contractors, or local nationals with privileged access to a U.S. DoD information system who perform information assurance (security) functions are required to earn and maintain a security certification in this program. The CERT-Certified Computer Security Incident Handler certification is now listed as a qualifying credential for the Computer Network Defense Service Provider (CND-SP) Incident Responder category. The CSIH certification program will earn final accreditation from the American National Standards Institute over the next few months.

The SEI continues to support its partner sponsored professionals with leading edge products and services. Key to this on-going support is the continuing advancement of SEI certification programs. The SEI began the transition of SEI CMMI professionals from authorization to certification in 2008 with SCAMPI Lead Appraisers. Transition of professionals now continues with CMMI v1.2 Introduction to CMMI Instructors.
Beginning June 1, 2009, CMMI v1.2 Introduction Instructors for all constellations will be able to start the process of transitioning from an authorized role to a certified role. Certification status will be officially granted beginning October 5th, 2009 at the 7th Annual CMMI Workshop in Orlando, FL. The transition period will conclude on December 31, 2009. There is only one step in the transition to certification. Each currently authorized and candidate CMMI v1.2 Instructor must sign and return the SEI Certification Agreement. That’s it, just one step to make the transition to a certified role!
Please sign and return the SEI Certification Agreement form before December 31, 2009. If you have already signed the agreement as part of another certification program, you do not need to submit it again. Those who submit or have already submitted their Certification Agreement will be transitioned to a certified status on October 5th, 2009. Beginning October 5th, 2009, your new certified role will be viewable on the SEI Partner Network website.
You may submit your Certification Agreement by mail, fax, or email to:
