Steps for Becoming an SEI-Certified Development Supplement for CMMI for Services Instructor

The Development Supplement for CMMI for Services course is a one-day course that introduces students to the CMMI for Development (CMMI-DEV) model and describes effective practices for developing quality products for customers and end users.

The course is composed primarily of class exercises, discussion, and presentations. After attending the course, attendees will be able to describe the CMMI-DEV model, discuss the model's process areas, and locate information in the model.

This course, with its prerequisite, Introduction to CMMI for Services, fulfills a prerequisite for any course or role requiring an official SEI Introductory CMMI for Development course. It is designed for professionals who have already taken Introduction to CMMI for Services. 

Licensed SEI Partners sponsor SEI-Certified Instructors in presenting this course around the globe. Listed below are the qualification activities in order for a sponsored educational professional to earn this credential.

Prerequisites

To begin the instructor certification process, candidates and their sponsoring organizations (SEI Partners) must complete the following prerequisites:

  • The candidate's sponsoring Partner organization must have a fully executed CMMI Product Suite License agreement for the delivery of the Development  Supplement for CMMI for Services course
  • The candidate must be an SEI-Certified Introduction to CMMI For Services Instructor in good standing
  • An SEI-Certified Introduction to CMMI for Services Instructor without any outstanding invoices, COPC violations, or under SEI COPC violation investigation at the time of application submission.

Qualification Steps

  1. Application for Candidate Sponsorship

    All SEI-Certified CMMI Instructors are sponsored by SEI Partner organizations. SEI Partners must recommend candidates to the SEI by submitting a completed SEI Partner sponsorship form for the applicant.

  2. Readiness Review

    Candidate instructors are required to complete a CMMI for Development Supplement Instructor Readiness Review. This review will provide additional detail and information in facilitating the course. The review may be conducted virtually or in-person at selected locations. Candidates will be evaluated during the review to determine readiness to teach a live class. Please contact certification-info@sei.cmu.edu for scheduling. After the readiness review has been scheduled, course materials will be released to the candidate for study and preparation.

  3. Certified!

    Upon completing the steps listed above, the certification will be granted by the SEI. Successful candidates will receive a certification diploma and will be listed in the SEI Partner Directory. SEI-Certified Development Supplement for CMMI for Services Instructors can use the CMMI instructional materials as located in the SEI Partner Resource Center. The sponsoring SEI partner shall ensure that candidate instructors have completed the instructor certification process before participating in formal course offerings.

    SEI-Certified Development Supplement for CMMI for Services instructors may teach the course only on behalf of an SEI Partner. SEI-Certified Development Supplement for CMMI for Services Instructors cannot use the materials to deliver courses independently or on behalf of organizations that are not licensed by CMU/SEI to deliver the CMMI Product Suite.


  4. Renewal

    After earning the Development Supplement for CMMI Instructor certification, instructors must complete professional development activities during the period which the credential is valid. To renew the SEI certification to teach the Development Supplement for CMMI course, instructors must complete all renewal requirements within a three year period. Failure to complete the above requirements will result in the suspension and possible expiration of the instructor’s certification.
