Become an SEI-Certified CMMI-DEV Level 3 for Practitioners Instructor
CMMI-DEV Practitioners are professionals who are analyzing, consulting, leading, participating, and supporting an organization or project in CMMI based process improvement projects, appraisals, appraisal teams, and/or process improvement organizational initiatives. This role encompasses several layers and types of individuals who are working in the process improvement environment.
SEI-certified Instructors present SEI-approved courses that review specific CMMI Maturity Level 3 process areas that you can use to compare to your organization's practices to guide your activities to meet your organization’s performance goals. Facilitated exercises and scenarios provide additional learning and reinforcement of the application of these concepts into the workplace.
Instructor Entry Prerequisites
- The candidate's sponsoring organization is an SEI Partner for the CMMI-DEV Level 3 for Practitioners course with a signed agreement.
- The candidate must be an SEI-Certified CMMI-DEV Level 2 for Practitioners Instructor in good standing.
- The candidate must have three years of experience as a CMMI-DEV Instructor or SCAMPI LA for Development with at least one ML/CL2 or higher appraisal reported to the SEI or equivalent experience as approved by the SEI.
Steps to Earn your Certification
- SEI Partner submits instructor candidate sponsorship form
SEI Partners must apply for the CMMI-DEV Level 3 for Practitioners licensing opportunity. Before an instructor can attend any SEI-sponsored activities described in step 4, a signed agreement must be in place. In addition, your sponsor will also submit a sponsorship recommendation form to the SEI.
- Submit Instructor application
Submit your application to the SEI. When your application is received, it will be reviewed for completeness, and you will receive a confirmation of receipt message.
- Application Review
Each application will be reviewed by the SEI. Documentation must show that applicants fulfill all the instructor selection criteria in the prerequisites listed above. You will receive a determination of status via email within 30 days of submission. When approved, you will be considered a candidate.
- Choose qualification track
Candidates have two qualification track options. Once approved by the application review committee, you are then designated as a candidate. Each candidate must choose a qualification track. The SEI must receive notification from the candidate of the decision via email or fax for coordination and scheduling. If you later decide to change to the other qualification track, candidates must notify the SEI.
(Note: Candidates who are SEI-Certified SCAMPI High Maturity Lead Appraisers and who also are SEI Certified Introduction to CMMI v1.2 Instructors in good standing will not be required to select a qualification track. Instead, these candidates will attend a Readiness Review that is described in Step 4.(C) as their qualifying event.)

A. Successfully Co-Teach CMMI Level 3 for Practitioners with an SEI Instructor
Co-teaching occurs when two Instructors jointly deliver materials to a group of students at a Partner-sponsored course. The SEI will assign an approved CMMI-DEV Level 3 for Practitioners Instructor who has demonstrated experience in teaching CMMI and using the course materials. A co-teaching event provides opportunity for students to learn from two qualified instructors. Both instructors are meaningfully involved in the presentation of course materials. Both instructors accept responsibility for presentation of the materials successfully to the students. Additionally, the SEI Co-Teaching Instructor will provide coaching, mentoring and feedback to the candidate before, during, and after the course. The SEI Co-Teaching Instructor will also provide an overall evaluation of the candidate. If you choose this option, you will contact the SEI to request a date for the class.
B. CMMI-DEV Level 3 for Practitioners Instructor Orientation Briefing.
The CMMI-DEV Level 3 for Practitioners Instructor Orientation Briefing will review the format, organization, materials, and exercises for instructors of the Level 3 course. Each Candidate may have pre-work assigned to discuss or present during the session. These sessions may be attended in person or via teleconferencing when scheduled by the SEI. Each candidate’s presentation, participation, and performance will be evaluated. Candidates who successfully complete this step will be certified. Candidates who do not successfully complete this step will be mentored with mitigation activities to correct underperforming areas of competency or skill.
