Become a SCAMPI Lead Appraiser for Acquisition

Prerequisites

To begin the SCAMPI Lead Appraiser for Acquisition certification process, you must complete the following:

  • The candidate must be an already qualified SEI-Authorized/Certified SCAMPI Lead Appraiser for Development in good standing using CMMI-DEV as outlined in the steps for becoming a SCAMPI LA for Development. In time, new candidates will be accepted without this background..
  • The candidate's organization has applied for you to become an SEI Partner for SCAMPI appraisal services using CMMI for Acquisition. The Partner organization must have been accepted, signed the applicable Carnegie Mellon University/SEI agreement, and had a representative sign the Code of Professional Conduct form for the organization. The Partner organization's business point of contact must submit this information for you to the SEI.

Steps for Becoming a SCAMPI Lead Appraiser for Acquisition

1 Submit Recommendation and Resume

Submit the following documentation via email to cmmi-acq-app@sei.cmu.edu:

  • An SEI CMMI for Services Partner organization must recommend you as a candidate. The Partner business point of contact must complete the SEI Partner Candidate Sponsorship form and submit it to the SEI.
  • Submit a resume and documentation that highlights experience necessary to meet the selection criteria listed below. A review board will evaluate your application using these criteria and will notify you of your evaluation results.

    Technical Experience and Skills

    • two years of experience managing technical or acquisition personnel
    • five years of experience in acquisition showing clear evidence of expertise in at least two critical areas and at least three technical areas selected from the lists below:
      • Critical areas (select at least two)
        • source selection
        • systems or software acquisition
        • program/project management
        • procurement
        • quality assurance
        • outsourcing
        • acquisition process improvement
        • acquisition constellation development
        • supply chain management

      • Technical areas (select at least three)
        • acquisition planning
        • requirements analysis
        • solicitation
        • contract administration
        • monitoring technical performance
        • validation
        • configuration management
        • measurement of product or process
        • government contracts or commercial contracting

Academic Credentials
Candidates must have an advanced degree related to acquisition, supply chain management, procurement, technical management, engineering, or equivalent experience.

2 Training

You must successfully complete the one-day Acquisition Supplement for CMMI v1.2 course.

3 SCAMPI LA for Acquisition Certification Examination

You can register for the SCAMPI LA for Acquisition qualification exam at the SEI Certification Program portal. The exam is offered at hundreds of testing locations throughout the world for a fee of $250. At the SEI’s discretion, an interview will be conducted after the examination to ensure the candidate has the necessary CMMI for Acquisition model knowledge.

4 Receive your Certification

After you successfully complete steps 1-3 above, your certification will be granted by the SEI. You will receive a certification diploma and will be listed in the SEI Partner Directory.

SEI-Authorized SCAMPI Lead Appraisers using CMMI-ACQ can use the SCAMPI appraisal materials, including appraisal team training materials, only to train appraisal teams and to lead appraisals on behalf of an SEI CMMI for Acquisition Partner. SEI-Authorized SCAMPI Lead Appraisers using CMMI-ACQ can not use the materials to conduct CMMI for Acquisition appraisals independently or on behalf of organizations that are not licensed by CMU/SEI to conduct appraisals.

Who is a SCAMPI Lead Appraiser for Acquisition?

An SEI-Certified SCAMPI Lead Appraiser uses the Standard CMMI® Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI) method V1.2 to appraise organizations' supply chain management, acquisition, and outsourcing processes in government and industry.
