Steps for Becoming a SCAMPI Lead Appraiser for Development

1 Register for the SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Training course

Complete your SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Training registration.

2 Confirmation of Experience

After your registration for the SCAMPI Lead Appraiser course is accepted, you will be contacted with instructions for submitting a resume to the SEI. Submit a resume outlining your education and experience and showing that your qualifications satisfy the selection criteria below:

  • Teaching Experience and Skills

Candidates must have training and/or experience in classroom presentation and management skills, including presenting procedural and conceptual information in a clear and concise manner, facilitating group discussion and interaction using instructional media presentation (audio/visual) systems and aids (e.g., overhead projector).
  • Discipline Area Experience and Skills

The SEI uses this criterion to determine whether the recommended candidate has sufficient subject matter expertise to be credible as a Lead Appraiser. The candidate must have at least 10 years of project management and engineering experience in systems or software. At least two of these years must include management of technical personnel.
  • Academic Credentials

Candidates must have an advanced degree in a related technical area (such as systems engineering or software engineering) or equivalent experience.
  • Appraisal Experience and Skills

The SEI uses this criterion to determine whether candidates possess sufficient experience and skills related to model-based process appraisals. The SEI must have a record of the candidate's participation as an appraisal team member on at least two SCAMPI A appraisals, or one SCAMPI A appraisal and two SCAMPI B or C appraisals, within 24 months prior to desired training.
  • Language Experience and Skills

The SEI uses these criteria to determine whether the candidate has the sufficient linguistic expertise necessary to become an SEI-Certified CMMI v1.2 SCAMPI Lead Appraiser. Fluency in English is required.
  • Training

This step requires candidates to successfully complete the five-day SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Training v1.2 course for delivery of SCAMPI Lead Appraiser services.

3 Agree to terms and conditions of SEI Certification

Review and complete the Certification Agreement form and send your signed form via email to certification-info@sei.cmu.edu or fax to 412-268-5758.

4 Submit a Partner Recommendation Form

An SEI Partner organization must recommend you to the SEI by submitting a Partner Candidate Sponsorship form.

5 SCAMPI LA Certification Examination

After successfully completing the SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Training course, you can register for the SCAMPI LA for Development qualification exam at the SEI Certification Program portal.

We recommend that you complete the exam at least 60 days prior to your observation as outlined in step 6. The exam is offered at hundreds of testing locations throughout the world for a fee of $250.

6 Observation

Within 12 months of successfully completing SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Training, you must demonstrate the ability to successfully lead a SCAMPI A appraisal according to the following guidelines:

  • The candidate's organization sponsors the appraisal, determines the location of the delivery, and requests an SEI-authorized observer to conduct the observation
  • Only one candidate SCAMPI Lead Appraiser can be observed per appraisal.
  • If an interpreter is required, the Partner is responsible for obtaining and payment of an SEI-approved interpreter.

The observer will provide you with feedback at the conclusion of the observation and will provide the required information to the SEI for your candidate observation package. If you pass your observation, the SEI will notify you of your status as a SCAMPI Lead Appraiser and will provide you with a certification diploma. For observations that are unsatisfactory, the SEI will provide feedback and, if necessary, steps for remediation. Any additional SEI support for remedial work may be billed in accordance with Partner Network pricing.

You must complete the process to become an SEI-Certified SCAMPI Lead Appraiser before leading SCAMPI appraisal deliveries.

7 Receive your Certification

If you pass the observation, your certification will be granted by the SEI. You will receive a certification diploma and will be listed in the SEI Partner Directory. SEI-Certified SCAMPI Lead Appraisers can use the SCAMPI appraisal materials, including appraisal team training materials, to train appraisal teams and to lead appraisals on behalf of an SEI Partner. SEI-Certified SCAMPI Lead Appraisers can not use the materials to conduct appraisals independently or on behalf of organizations that are not licensed by the SEI to conduct appraisals.

Consistency, Quality, and Effectiveness: SCAMPI Appraisal Technology

The Class A Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI) is designed to provide benchmark quality ratings relative to Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) models. The SEI Appraisal Program oversees the quality and consistency of the SEI's SCAMPI appraisal technology and encourages its effective use.

The SCAMPI A, B, and C methods are diagnostic tools that support, enable, and encourage an organization's commitment to process improvement. The methods help organizations gain insight into their process capability or organizational maturity by identifying process strengths and weaknesses as related to the best practices of one or more CMMI models. SCAMPI A V1.2 is the method of choice for benchmarking.
