As announced in 2008, the SEI will expand its certified roles to include a credential for SEI-Certified TSP Mentor Coach. The program is currently under development, with implementation anticipated for September 2009. If you have any questions or wish to sign up as an early adopter, please send an email to certification-info@sei.cmu.edu.
Launch (or re-launch) a minimum of four different teams during the five-year period immediately preceding the mentor coach application. The launch or re-launch to postmortem cycles must total at least 52 team-weeks of coaching experience. Evidence must be available from data submissions made to the SEI.
Teach or co-teach three of the courses from the TSP product suite; these courses must be any one PSP course and any two non-PSP courses listed in the product suite.
Complete the requirements for each of the following TSP events associated with the aforementioned (re)launched teams, as evidenced with reports and actual data submitted to the SEI:
-TSP checkpoints (minimum of four)
-TSP project postmortems (minimum of three)
Obtain a letter of recommendation to be a mentor coach from all team leaders of the aforementioned (re)launched teams, and at least 50% of the associated team members.
Submit a TSP Mentor Coach application, along with proof that you have experience teaching or co-teaching three of the courses from the TSP product suite within 24 months of submission of this application. These courses may consist of any one PSP course and any two non-PSP courses listed in the product suite.
All prospective TSP Mentor Coaches must attend Mentor Coach Training. Evaluation of each candidate will be conducted during the training. Candidates who successfully complete this phase will be awarded SEI certification as a TSP Mentor Coach. Candidates who do not receive a satisfactory evaluation must repeat this step before certification will be granted.
Upon successful completion of the mentor certification/training process, the SEI will grant you a four-year certification to mentor provisional TSP coaches and recommend them for certification. You will receive access to the materials and services for TSP Coaches. You will also receive a welcome kit and a diploma recognizing your accomplishment.
SEI-Certified TSP Mentor Coaches must renew their certifications every four years. Renewal criteria are as follows:
Be an SEI-Certified TSP Coach in good standing.
Be an SEI-Authorized PSP Instructor in good standing.
Successfully mentor at least two provisional coaches through the complete process of becoming SEI-Certified TSP Coaches during the renewal cycle.
Team Software Process
The Team Software Process (TSP) is a disciplined and structured
approach to product development that can be applied to many different
types of projects. As a TSP Mentor Coach, you have the knowledge,
skills, and abilities to transfer knowledge and experience to provisional
TSP coaches just entering the field of software-based product development
teams.
TSP Mentor Coaches
are experienced professionals who act as trusted counselors, role
models, and guides to newcomers and those less experienced in the field
of TSP. Mentoring involves a mutually beneficial learning situation in
which the mentor provides advice, shares knowledge and experiences, and
teaches using a low-pressure approach that enables the mentee to
discover his or her own particular strengths and areas for improvement.
Mentoring will replace SEI observations of new candidates in the
qualification of TSP Coaches.
