CMMI Steward

Purpose

The role of the CMMI Steward is to ensure the quality and widespread use of the CMMI Product Suite and to support its adoption throughout government and industry.

Membership

The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) is the Steward of the CMMI Product Suite. Active partnerships and participation by government and industry are needed to support the CMMI Steward's role.

Operation

The CMMI Steward supports and facilitates the maintenance and evolution of the CMMI Product Suite. The Steward's responsibilities are to provide models and assessment method descriptions to the public; provide widely available, high quality training and assessment programs; administer quality control of CMMI Product Suite usage; provide CMMI Framework and Product Suite communications; participate in standards development and conformance; analyze and give feedback on CMMI Product Suite use, impact, and value; and implement a valid funding model.

To achieve these goals, the Steward interacts with several government, industry, and SEI members. The Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics (OUSD [A, T&L]) directs and monitors the SEI (parent organization of the Steward) as a federally funded research and development center. The OUSD provides both budgetary and technical oversight of the CMMI Product Suite, and sponsors the CMMI Steering Group. The National Defense Industries Association (NDIA) Systems Engineering Committee (SEC) is the lead Industry sponsor of the CMMI development effort, and of the CMMI Steering Group. The NDIA SEC guides the maintenance and evolution of the CMMI Product Suite, charters and supports the CMMI Steering Group, enrolls Industry expertise, and supports the use of the CMMI Product Suite among industrial companies. The CMMI Steering Group and Product Team, whose members are appointed from government, industry, and the SEI, also work with the Steward to oversee CMMI development and improvement activities.
