CMMI and ITIL

With the publication of CMMI for Services, comparison with ITIL began almost immediately because CMMI for Services applies to service organizations. However, misinformation is already making its way into the discussion. CMMI applies to software and hardware, in fact all products and services. If you begin looking at organizations that have implemented both CMMI and ITIL, you’ll find that these two technologies work well together.

CMMI and ITIL complement each other in ways that enhance the other. Review some of these publications for more details:

Match Point: Who Will Win the Game, ITIL or CMMI-SVC, a presentation by Anju Saxena and John Maher of TATA Consultancy Services, compares ITIL and CMMI and determines a winner.

First Steps in Implementing the CMMI for Services Model and ITIL—A Tutorial, a presentation by David Johnston of DAJex Associates Ltd. And Karyn Tegtmeier of KT BITS, Business and IT Solutions, describes how ITIL and CMMI for Services can be used together.

CMMI, ITIL & ISO 20000: A Mutually Supportive Relationship, a presentation by Kieran Doyle of Lamri, describes the interrelationships among these three technologies.

CMMI and ITIL: Competing or Integrative Process Frameworks?, a Gartner analysis of CMMI and ITIL, concludes that using both maximizes your benefits.

There are other methods, standards, and technologies that comprise CMMI Compatibility.
