Adapting CMMI for Acquisition Organizations: A Preliminary Report Released

return to CMMI main page

June 2006

General Motors and the Software Engineering Institute have announced that Adapting CMMI for Acquisition Organizations: A Preliminary Report has been released. This report is the initial draft CMMI for Acquisition (CMMI-ACQ) and will be piloted, further developed, and then released as part of an official CMMI for Acquisition (CMMI-ACQ) constellation.

General Motors, in collaboration with the SEI and with the approval of the CMMI Sponsors and Steering Group, sponsored the development of this initial draft CMMI-ACQ, which through piloting and use will lead to a CMMI-based acquisition model accepted by both government and industry.

The initial draft CMMI-ACQ is based on the CMMI Version 1.2 architecture and model framework, which incorporate the concept of constellations. Constellations are groupings of components that support a particular area of interest such as Development (DEV) or Acquisition (ACQ). This initial draft also is based on the CMMI Acquisition Module and the Software Acquisition Capability Maturity Model (SA-CMM).

The initial draft CMMI-ACQ provides process improvement guidance for organizations engaged in acquisition. The practices focus on activities required for supplier sourcing; initiating and awarding supplier agreements; and managing the acquisition of products and services through a set of standard measures, acceptance criteria, and supplier deliverables. The initial draft CMMI-ACQ integrates bodies of knowledge that are essential for an acquirer.

By integrating these bodies of knowledge, the initial draft CMMI-ACQ provides a comprehensive solution for acquirers as they work with suppliers to develop and maintain products and services. When the CMMI for Development model v1.2 is released, it will serve as the reference for supplier organizations conducting systems engineering, software engineering, and hardware design.
