Research

Below are multiple research categories that CMMI staff is now pursuing. There are often opportunities for you to participate in CMMI research. If you are interested, contact Customer Relations at 1-888-201-4479.

Process Improvement in Multi-Model Environments

The Process Improvement in Multimodel Environments (PrIME) project spans topics that are needed for an organization to be successful with process improvement in multi-model environments. The project concentrates on several subsets of models and standards that are commonly used in industry, such as Six Sigma, CMMI, Lean, and Agile methods.

Studies of CMMI’s Effect on Performance

The SEI researches the impact of adopting CMMI on the performance of user organizations. Typically, performance results of CMMI include improved cost, schedule, productivity, quality, and customer satisfaction goals. Return on investment is also calculated.

Integrated Use of TSP and CMMI

The SEI works with organizations that have adopted CMMI and TSP to gather input for mapping CMMI and TSP and identify how these two approaches complement each other.

Integrated Use of Six Sigma and CMMI

The SEI works with organizations that have adopted CMMI and Six Sigma to identify effective ways to integrate these two approaches.

Mapping Other Standards with CMMI

CMMI, IEEE, and ISO standards share a common purpose related to quality and process management. The SEI and IEEE use input from collaborators to identify ways in which CMMI, ISO, and other standards complement one another. Mappings enable users to discover the details of CMMI synergies.

Improving Processes in Small Organizations

Small businesses, organizational units, and project teams pose unique challenges for process improvement. Early research shows that process improvement can be effective in small organizations. The SEI works with partners to discover ways that small organizations can achieve the benefits of process improvement while working with tight resource and cost limitations.

State-of-the-Practice Studies

State-of-the-practice studies are conducted to show how CMMI users are performing their work and to allow the SEI to identify changes and trends that may arise in response to the introduction and adoption of SEI technologies. The SEI publishes the results of these studies to allow organizations to compare their improvement project with others.

Improvements to CMMI Products and Services

The SEI pilots new ideas and analyzes their results to determine if improvements should be made to CMMI products and services.

Translating CMMI into Other Languages

The SEI has worked with organizations to translate the CMMI Product Suite into Japanese, traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, and German.
If you are interested in working with the SEI on one of these research projects, contact Customer Relations at 1-888-201-4479.
