Appraisal Reference Documents

The following documents are typically used during SCAMPI appraisals to provide detailed information about how appraisals are conducted:

The SCAMPI Method Definition Document (MDD) and the Handbook for Conducting SCAMPI B and C Appraisals are process documents used by lead appraisers to evaluate your processes and compare them to CMMI-ACQ, CMMI-DEV, CMMI-SVC, the P-CMM, or some other reference model.

The SCAMPI Lead Appraiser Body of Knowledge (SLA BOK) describes the abilities and skills required to be a successful SCAMPI Lead Appraiser.

The Handbook for Conducting Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI) B and C Appraisals, Version 1.1 defines the boundaries of tailoring and provides guidance for applying the SCAMPI B and SCAMPI C methods.

Other Publications

The SCAMPI family of appraisals is based on the Appraisal Requirements for CMMI (ARC), which defines the requirements for appraisal methods intended for use with CMMI and People CMM reference models.

Process Improvement for All: What to Expect from CMMI Version 1.3, an article published by CrossTalk, describes the improvements made to CMMI with the release of Version 1.3.

There are many publications available about appraisals, how they are conducted and how the results are used. Search the Library using the keyword “appraisal” to find books, reports, presentations, and more.

There is a large collection of articles, books, presentations, and white papers about CMMI and related topics in the SEI's Software Engineering Information Repository (SEIR). Users as well as SEI staff regularly contribute materials to the repository. It includes categories such as General Information, FAQ/News Groups, Benefits/Case Studies, and Implementation (including Lessons Learned). The repository is free after registration.

Guidance for appraisers is available to support consistent, quality appraisals.
