An SEI Affiliate Opportunity

Team: Capability Maturity Modeling®Integration

Program: Software Engineering Process Management
Team leader: D. Michael Phillips

Summary of Opportunity

The Software Engineering Process Management Program at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) provides leadership to software dependent organizations by transitioning proven, state-of-the-art, process focused methods for improving product costs, schedule and quality. We are part of a world recognized center of excellence for software engineering research, the Software Engineering Institute, which serves as a trusted broker among industry, government, and academia. We deliver products that are the practical solutions of choice for organizations world-wide who want to continuously improve their own processes and products.

The Capability Maturity Modeling Group maintains stewardship over a set of CMM®s, which are reference models based on best practices; these CMMs assist organizations in maturing their people, process, and technology assets for the purpose of improving long-term business performance. Our goals in developing CMMs include these:

The SEI must exercise leadership to ensure that the various CMMs within its reach can be used synergistically, and that model developers, both internal and external, have guidance in producing new CMMs that will integrate with others already built.

The Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) project is a joint U.S. government, industry, and SEI effort to design, implement, transition, and sustain a CMMI system. The CMMI system provides industry and government with a set of integrated products to support process and product improvement. By reducing redundancy and complexity with the separate use of multiple CMMs, the CMMI system should improve the efficiency of and the Return on Investment for process improvement. The resulting integrated CMMs will be tailorable to an organization's mission and business objectives.

A priority for the project is to focus on facilitating the adoption of the CMMI system, particularly for software-centric organizations.

Results to be Accomplished

Benefits to sponsoring organization: hands-on experience implementing multiple CMM usage strategies; advanced knowledge of directions in CMM evolution; opportunity to provide important feedback to SEI on current CMMI strategies.

Potential Affiliates Tasks and Responsibilities

Act as a piloting agent for CMM integration work products and concepts at one or more pilot sites. This position entails working with the CMMI community events manager to plan, coordinate, implement, gather data, and incorporate results from pilot activities in one or more organizations doing multi-CMM pilots with the SEI. This would also entail accepting writing assignments and reviewing CMMI work products, and participating in planning and implementing public workshops for multi-CMM users and stake-holders. This job is likely to entail moderate travel, depending on the location(s) of pilot(s). This position offers the possibility of a non-resident affiliate as well, if the Affiliate's home organization is the pilot site.

Prerequisites

In-depth knowledge of at least one of the CMMs in use with pilots (typically, but not necessarily, the CMMI), experience as an organizational change agent, strong writing and verbal communication skills, moderate knowledge of SEI CMMs (which can be developed as part of the job if at least one CMM is understood in depth).
