An SEI Affiliate Opportunity
Team: Software Engineering Measurement and Analysis (SEMA):
Contemporary Issues in Software Measurement
Team leader: Dave Zubrow
Summary of Opportunity
As software projects continue to be larger and more complex, management and control of software projects, whether they are stand-alone projects or part of software-intensive systems, continue to be problematic. Cost overruns, late deliveries, and poor quality products plague those developing and acquiring software-intensive systems in both the defense and commercial sectors. One of the key components for improving this situation is the development and use of measurement techniques to help organizations effectively manage and improve their projects, products, and processes.
SEMA is looking for an affiliate to support the following areas of measurement practice:
- Providing insight into the Measurement and Analysis Process Area and the Project and Process Management Process Areas of the CMMI® models
- Reporting on measures and mechanisms for monitoring and controlling the acquisition of software-intensive systems
- Assessing software product quality
- Applying empirical validation methods to software measures
Affiliates will work with members of the SEMA team skilled in conducting empirical research as well as members with expertise in software measurement. Ideally, they would bring first-hand experience of issues associated with the implementation of measurement activities within a software organization engaged in software process improvement.
Results to be Accomplished
The results of the research and development associated with the particular measurement area investigated would be published in the form of a case study, technical report, workshop, literature review, or survey.
Potential Affiliates Tasks and Responsibilities
We are seeking affiliates to assist with these tasks by
- conducting independent investigations of current measurement practices
- developing case studies for both lower maturity and CMMI maturity level 4 and 5 organizations that use effective analysis methods
- contributing to the conduct of a survey of practices
- conducting validation studies of various software measures
