SEI Architecture-Centric Engineering (ACE) Workshop for Educators

Eighth SEI Architecture-Centric Engineering (ACE) Workshop for Educators

The Eighth SEI Software Architecture Workshop for Educators was held at the Software Engineering Institute in Pittsburgh, PA, on August 9-10, 2011. This workshop offered two courses as the centerpiece: Service-Oriented Architecture: Best Practices for Successful Adoption and Service-Oriented Architecture: Legacy Systems Migration.

The format was similar to previous workshops. The workshop began with the one-day course, Service-Oriented Architecture: Best Practices for Successful Adoption.  This introductory course provides a "50,000-foot" view of SOA implications for an organization; introduces services, service consumers, and infrastructure as basic components of service-oriented systems; outlines common technologies for enabling service-oriented systems; and addresses SOA development challenges.

The second day consisted of the course Service-Oriented Architecture: Legacy Systems Migration. This course builds on the common misconception that it is easy to integrate any legacy system into an SOA environment. The course begins with the presentation of business and technical considerations that would make a migration effort infeasible. The three elements of the SOA Migration, Adoption, and Reuse Technique (SMART) are introduced as a way to analyze the viability of reusing legacy systems in SOA environments.

The third day was a group session, facilitated by SEI team members, to share experiences, ideas and tangible artifacts for introducing software architecture and product line topics into the college curriculum. This "entry fee" was suggested by the 2010 workshop attendees to formalize the sharing that has traditionally taken place.

Collaboration at this workshop resulted in a workshop proposal for SIGCSE 2012.
