Information Security Certificates and Certification

The SEI offers two Information Security certificates and one certification: the SEI Certificate in Information Security, the SEI Certificate in Incident Response Process, and the CERT-Certified Computer Security Incident Handler Certification.

SEI Certificate in Information Security

This certificate is designed to provide participants with practical techniques for protecting the security of an organization's information assets and resources and increase the depth of knowledge and skills of technical staff charged with administering and securing information systems and networks. Security issues, technologies, and recommended practices are addressed at increasing layers of complexity, beginning with concepts and proceeding on to technical implementations.

The courses required for this certificate involve extensive hands-on laboratories utilizing a heterogeneous network environment, scenario-based exercises, lecture/briefings, and open discussion to help participants develop their understanding of the problems and strategies for securing information systems and networks.

Participants must complete the following courses to earn this certificate:

The required courses are also part of the curriculum for the CERT-Certified Incident Handler Program.

SEI Certificate in Incident Response Process

This certificate is for computer security incident response team (CSIRT) technical personnel. The first course in the certificate provides a basic introduction to the main incident handling tasks and critical thinking skills that will help an incident handler perform their job. The second course then addresses commonly used and emerging attacks that are targeted against a variety of operating systems and architectures. Ultimately, this certificate is designed to provide insight into the type and nature of work that an incident handler may perform. It will provide an overview of the incident handling arena, including CSIRT services, intruder threats, the nature of incident response activities, and the steps that incident handlers can take in response to system compromises at the privileged level.

The courses incorporate interactive construction, facilitated discussions, practical group exercises, and role playing. Participants must complete the following courses to earn this certificate:

The required courses are also part of the curriculum for the CERT-Certified Incident Handler Program.

CERT-Certified Computer Security Incident Handler Certification

The CERT®-Certified Computer Security Incident Handler (CSIH) certification program has been created for incident handling professionals, computer security incident response team (CSIRT) technical staff, system and network administrators with incident handling experience, incident handling trainers and educators, and individuals with some technical training who want to enter the incident handling field. It is recommended for those computer security professionals with three or more years of experience in incident handling and/or equivalent security-related experience.
