IPRC Publishes A Process Research Framework

The International Process Resarch Consortium (IPRC) has published a new book titled A Process Research Framework, now available via SEI Customer Relations.

The IPRC brings together 27 leaders from academia and industry to study the implications of both plausible future scenarios and existing process research. The result is a research framework that addresses the question of how the communities represented by the IPRC membership should invest in process research during the next decade. By providing systematically organized research themes and targeted question, the framework serves as a focusing tool for industry, researchers, and funding agencies in deterrmining the most fruitful questions to address in their own research programs.

Click here to read more about the framework. The book is available until April 30 for an initial special price of US$32.99. Beginning May 1 2007, the book will cost $49.99. SEI Customer Relations can be contacted at +1 412-268-5800 or via e-mail.

International Research Workshop for Process Improvement in Small Settings

The International Research Workshop for Process Improvement in Small Settings was held October 19-20 at the SEI in Pittsburgh. Attendees from Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Germany, Ireland, India, Japan, Malaysia, Spain, Mexico, and the United States discussed the challenges of process improvement in small and medium size enterprises, small organizations within large companies, and small projects. The presentations addressed starting and sustaining process improvement, qualitative and quantitative studies, and using CMMI, Agile, MoProSoft, ISO, QFD, and TSP in small settings. The workshop also had working groups that discussed issues unique to small settings, such as regional support centers and process improvement "on a shoestring."

IPRC Member Awarded Canada Research Chair in Electronic Health Information

An international panel of experts recently approved the nomination of IPRC member Khaled El Emam as Canada Research Chair in Electronic Health Information. A limited number of these prestigious research professorships are awarded through a $900 million program funded by the Canadian government. Nominees are exceptional emerging researchers, considered by their peers to have the capacity for leadership in their field.

El Emam's research at the University of Ottawa concerns the electronic health records used in Canada and around the world to manage and deliver health care. He is studying the human, organizational, and technological factors that affect the quality of data contained in those records. Ultimately, this research will form a foundation for the tools, guidelines, and standards necessary for ensuring the quality of data contained in electronic health records. To support this research, the Canadian government will grant the University of Ottawa $100,000 each year for the duration of El Emam's five-year tenure as a Canada Research Chair.

Global Business Network Lent Expertise to International Process Research Consortium

Jonathan Star, a practitioner from leading consulting organization Global Business Network (GBN), participated in the second workshop of the International Process Research Consortium (IPRC). Star is a specialist in scenario planning, future research, business strategy, and public policy. He presented information about global trends for members of the IPRC to consider during the January 16 workshop. As a discussant, Star also observed the workshop and provided the consortium members with his reflections and insights.

GBN is a learning community, based in San Francisco, that taps a global network of strategic thinkers in industry, the sciences, the arts, business, and academia. GBN's expertise in the exploration of emerging issues helped IPRC members formulate a research agenda for "what's next" in process research.

Bosch Joins International Process Research Consortium (IPRC)

The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) is pleased to welcome German industrial company Robert Bosch, GmbH as a founding sponsor of the International Process Research Consortium. The SEI-organized consortium will conduct a series of workshops through 2006, eventually producing a roadmap that will chart the likely course of process research for the next 5-10 years. Founding organizations have committed their expertise, energy, and imagination to this visionary, collaborative endeavor.

Caroline Graettinger, Chair of the IPRC, calls Bosch's sponsorship of IPRC "a natural fit." Innovation in research and development and an international outlook are key to the company's organizational identity. This international perspective and commitment to the leading edge of research and development represent the kind of global, forward-thinking approach that Graettinger and other consortium organizers believe is critical in creating scenarios for future process research.

Bosch is recognized worldwide as a leader in security systems, broadband networks, and diverse technology areas ranging from automotive, automation, metals, and packaging technology to power tools, heating technology, and household appliances. Since it began in Germany nearly 120 years ago, Bosch has founded international agencies in over 50 countries and has been one of the largest industrial organizations in the Federal Republic of Germany for the past 40 years.

First International Process Research Consortium Workshop a Success
The International Process Research Consortium (IPRC) has pronounced its first workshop a success. Twenty-one leaders from industry and academia attended the inaugural IPRC workshop, held August 11-13 in Huntington Beach, California. The attendees, all globally recognized experts in the field of software process, met to launch the IPRC and begin exploring new horizons in process research and development.

Each attendee presented fellow consortium members with a vision of future trends, problems, solutions, and research areas in software process research. The international membership of the consortium hails from Spain, Mexico, Germany, Canada, Italy, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Korea, Australia, and the United States. This meeting, the first of six, was designed to get as many ideas on the table as possible in a short amount of time. The second meeting, scheduled for January 2005, will build on these ideas to provide future workshops with a full set of concepts to evaluate, synthesize, and prioritize.
