Research Framework Scenarios Research Framework | Background | Available Assets A Process Research Framework organizes process research needs for the next 10 years, a challenge that inherently required IPRC members to consider one focal question: What will be the nature of software, systems, and the enterprise over the next 10 years? To address this subject, the IPRC created scenarios of possible futures, created by combining currently existing driving forces in plausible, but not necessarily expected, ways. Scenarios provide unique narratives of what the world could look like as various forces come into play and how those forces could influence the tightly coupled connections between people, processes, projects, products, services, and organizations. Processes do not exist outside of some context. The scenarios were developed to analyze the impact of future social, political, and technological trends on software, systems, enterprises, and IT as a whole. The scenarios represent extensions of current trends, both optimistic and pessimistic. The implications of the thirteen developed scenarios were assessed collectively in terms of the requirements they would place on process—especially software process. This led to the definition of detailed process research themes and questions, the heart of A Process Research Framework. We aimed to identify themes and questions that were most likely to be of value irrespective of the actual outcome of social, political, and technological trends. Just as no one can accurately predict the future, a scenario developed during the work of this group might not apply to each reader’s anticipated needs. Readers may prefer to construct their own scenarios that capture the world in which the processes your organization needs must operate efficiently and effectively.
