This Web page contains guidelines to help you make proper referential use of Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute (SEI) trademarks and service marks in your documents (e.g., files, presentations, Web pages).

Identify Marks with Symbols

The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) requests that the first time a Carnegie Mellon service mark, trademark, or registered mark appears in your document, it is followed by these superscripted marks respectively: ^SM, ^TM, or ^®.

See the list below to determine which symbol is appropriate. If you are using a text editor that does not support these symbols and/or superscripted text, the symbols should be replaced by (SM), (TM), or an asterisk.

Use a Footnote

Include a footnote at the bottom of the page where the mark first appears (or at the end of the file if your text editor does not divide text into pages). Multiple marks may be combined in the same footnote as long as they are associated with the same symbol. Marks that use different symbols must be listed in separate footnotes. See the footnote examples that follow this list for help in composing the appropriate footnote(s):

• ^SM PSP and IDEAL are service marks of Carnegie Mellon University.

Examples for multiple marks of different kinds:

• ^® CMMI is registered in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office by Carnegie Mellon University. ^SM PSP is a service mark of Carnegie Mellon University.
• ^SM IDEAL is a service mark of Carnegie Mellon University. ^TM Simplex is a trademark of Carnegie Mellon University.

Examples for a text editor that does not permit symbols or superscripted text:
