SEI Service Migration and Reuse Technique (SMART)

Moving to a service-oriented architecture (SOA) environment can enable the reuse of legacy systems, providing a significant return on the investment in these systems. However, migrating legacy systems to an SOA environment is neither automatic nor easy.

Some issues to consider:

  • Does the legacy system contain functionality that can be made available as services in an SOA environment?
  • Who would consume these services?
  • What are technical characteristics of the target SOA environment that can enable or constrain the migration effort?
  • What effort is required to create the identified services from legacy components?
