As the world
moves toward a knowledge-based economy, the role of an organization’s
workforce, the “knowledge worker”, becomes a critical component in
organization success and a source of competitive advantage. The SEI’s
People Capability Maturity Model® (P-CMM®) provides a roadmap for
continuously improving the capability of an organization’s workforce.
The roadmap provides a guide for transforming an organization by
steadily improving and evolving its workforce practices. To implement
change successfully, an organization must engage and gain buy-in from
all levels and roles in the organization including executives,
managers, process owners, and employees. One of the benefits of P-CMM
is that it considers these multiple levels as wells as the necessary
infrastructure and institutionalization required for successful and
lasting change. While each level of the organization has its roles and
responsibilities in a change effort, this presentation will focus on
those of the unit manager. In order to build workforce capability,
organizations must develop managers that take responsibility and
authority for managing, developing, and motivating the individuals who
are under their direction. In the context of a maturity level 2 P-CMM
improvement program, this presentation will address the roles and
responsibilities of the manager, how managers can use the level 2
practices to implement changes, and lastly introduce the concept of a
manager’s toolkit.
