Integrated City Operation Center: An Architecture Case Study with ADD & Data Flow Analysis (SATURN 2007)

This presentation was created for the SATURN conference series and does not necessarily reflect the positions and views of the Software Engineering Institute.

Integrated City Operation Center (ICOC) is the operating and control center for the ubiquitous city (U-city), where virtually everything is linked to an information system through various u-services and u-devices across the whole city. Since the ICOC is an emerging concept, it is expected to play a vital role in the success of U-city. With this given major business driver, the ICOC system was started, but it wasn’t clear how to build the architecture for it. It was expected to be a software-intensive system that combines the various COTS components including GIS products, rule engines, and 3-D modeling engines and databases. Also, since the concept was new to every stakeholder, it was very difficult to identify the clear requirements as well. To solve this problem, we decided to define a conceptual architecture that can present the high-level concerns of stakeholders. Therefore, we tailored the SDS architecting process in order to apply SEI Attribute Driven Design (ADD) and data flow analysis. At first, we defined a specific business case from existing city planning data and several assumptions. Then we analyzed I/O data in the u-city environment. Data flow analysis was the key activity in this process; thus, we could define the architectural elements and their relationship to ICOC. This case study will show the following: • how ADD could help to define the architectural elements and their relations • how the SDS architecting process was applied within this process • how data flow analysis helped define this process In this session, we will introduce the case study of the ICOC architecture of Samsung SDS and describe the architecture process with ADD, data flow, and I/O analysis.
