Around the globe, progressive utilities see the inevitability of adopting a smart grid that uses digital technology to modernize the power grid. More than meters and mobility, the smart grid represents a whole new framework for improved management of electricity generation, transmission and distribution. Embarking on a smart grid journey can prove daunting, but with the proper tools and processes, utilities can begin to realize a smarter grid.

The Smart Grid Maturity Model (SGMM) is a management tool that helps utilities plan smart grid implementation, prioritize options, and measure progress.  Developed by utilities for utilities, the model is hosted by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University. The SEI is maintaining and evolving the SGMM as a resource for industry transformation with the support of the U.S. Department of Energy and input from a broad array of stakeholders.

This webinar will introduce attendees to the SGMM and how it can be used to help utilities assess their current state of smart grid implementation, define their goals, and generate inputs into their road mapping, planning, and implementation processes. It will also describe recent developments in the SGMM community and how utilities of varying types and sizes are benefiting from using the model.

About the Speaker

David White is a member of the Resilient Enterprise Management (REM) team in the CERT Program at the SEI. The REM team performs research and development in the areas of operational resilience, critical infrastructure protection, and smart grid deployment.

He is the project manager and a core member of the development team for the SEI Smart Grid Maturity Model (SGMM), a business tool to assist utilities in planning and tracking progress on their grid modernization efforts.

White is also a core member of the development team for the CERT® Resilience Management Model (RMM), a process improvement model that provides guidelines for converging and managing security and business continuity from an operational risk perspective. David is an instructor for the Introduction to the CERT Resilience Management Model course and a lead appraiser for the RMM capability appraisal method.

He has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. White is currently based in New York City. *David White photo courtesy of
