(October 2011) SEI Partner Network: A Global Network of Trusted Providers

A Brief Survey of the Team Software Process (TSP)
(October 2011) In his 2010 book Software Engineering Best Practices, Capers Jones identifies the Team Software Process (TSP) as one of the most effective practices for software developers. This presentation briefly describes training and introduction of TSP practices, including the Personal Software Process (PSP), the results and benefits potentials inherent in the methods, and the common use of TSP methods in combination with other popular practices, including Agile (Scrum, TDD, XP), architecture, secure coding, RUP, Six Sigma, and CMMI.

Measuring Operational Resilience
(October 2011) Traditional operational security metrics such as number of machines patched, vulnerability scan results, number of incidents, and number of staff trained are easy to collect and can be useful. However, if your objectives are to inform decisions, affect behavior, and determine control effectiveness in support of business objectives, you'll need to consider a set of more strategic resilience measures. This presentation suggests 10 such measures and a means for deriving them.

Agile Development and Architecture: Understanding Scale and Risk
(October 2011) Over the past decade, Agile software development and software architecture practices have received significant attention from both industry and government. The complementary nature of Agile development and software architecture practices is also increasingly better recognized and appreciated. However, applying Agile development with a concurrent focus on architecture is still experimental and experiential rather than a proven practice based on sound engineering techniques.

Smart Grid Maturity Model: A Vision for the Future of Smart Grid
(October 2011) The smart grid represents a whole new framework for improved management of electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. A reliable, secure energy supply is vital to our economy, our security, and our well being. With the support of the U.S. Department of Energy, the SEI is the steward of the Smart Grid Maturity Model (SGMM), a management tool for the utility industry to plan their smart grid journey. This presentation will offer insight into the past year's use of the SGMM and show how utilities are working with the model. The presentation will also describe the release of the SGMM V1.2 Product Suite. As more and more utilities around the globe participate and the SGMM experience base grows, the SGMM becomes an increasingly valuable resource for helping to inform the industry's smart grid transformation.

The Insider Threat: Lessons Learned from Actual Insider Attacks
(October 2011) The Insider Threat Center at CERT, which has been researching insider threats since 2001, has built an extensive library and comprehensive database containing more than 700 actual cases of insider cyber crimes. This presentation will describe findings from our analysis of three primary types of insider cyber crimes: IT sabotage, theft of information, and fraud. All CERT insider threat research focuses on both the technical and behavioral aspects of actual compromises. This presentation will describe who committed the crimes, their motivation, organizational issues surrounding the incidents, methods of carrying out the attacks, impacts, and precursors that could have served as indicators to the organization in preventing the incident or detecting it earlier. It will also convey the "big picture" of the insider threat problem - the complex interactions, relative degree of risk, and unintended consequences of policies, practices, technology, insider psychological issues, and organizational culture over time.

Architectural Implications of Cloud Computing by Grace Lewis
(October 2011) Cloud computing is being adopted by commercial, government, and Department of Defense (DoD) organizations, driven by a need to reduce the operational cost of their information technology (IT) resources. From an engineering perspective, cloud computing is a distributed computing paradigm that focuses on providing a wide range of users with distributed access to virtualized hardware and/or software infrastructure over the Internet.

Software Acquisition Program Dynamics
(October 2011) Analysis work by the SEI on data collected from more than 100 Independent Technical Assessments (ITAs) of software-reliant acquisition programs has produced insights into the most common ways that programs encounter difficulties. Programs regularly experience recurring cost, schedule, and quality failures, and progress and outcomes often appear to be unpredictable and unmanageable. Furthermore, many acquisition leaders and staffers neither recognize these recurring issues nor realize that known solutions exist for many of these problems. In this area of work, the SEI is trying to mitigate the effects of misaligned acquisition program organizational incentives and adverse software-reliant acquisition structural dynamics by improving program staff decision making.

CMMI-SVC: The Strategic Landscape for Service
(October 2011) The majority of the global economy is now service, rather than manufacturing or trading of tangible goods. Even the development of goods and systems increasingly takes on the character of service. This is a reality for all of the major players in the world, and it even offers a unique opportunity for emerging markets and industries. Eileen Forrester, manager of the CMMI for Services (CMMI-SVC) Project at the SEI, will talk about not only the current state of CMMI-SVC, but the larger strategic choices open to those who consider how superior service can revolutionize both work and business results. Innovative approaches already working in the United States, Latin America, Asia, and Europe can be tailored to your needs and make you a service leader in your markets.

Linda writes, "Architects, like the rest of us, struggle to influence our teams or organizations to adopt good ideas—whether we want to move our department to a better development method or suggest a Friday night movie for the family. We develop great solutions but struggle to make something happen. How can we influence change?"

Software Architecture and Agility: A Clash of Two Cultures?
(June 2010) This IEEE Software presentation was given by Philippe Kruchten of the University of British Columbia. He writes, "Software architecture is taking a bad rap with the agilists and other proponents of agile and lean software development approaches: 'BUFD (big up-front design);' 'YAGNI (You Ain't Gonna Need It);' 'massive documentation;' 'smells of waterfall;' these are common claims made about software architecture when it is portrayed as a typical nonagile practice. However, in certain classes of systems, ignoring architectural issues for too long causes teams to 'hit a wall' and collapse from a lack of architectural focus. But isn't 'Agile architecture' a paradox or an oxymoron? Aren't they two totally incompatible approaches?"

Managing Scale and Agility: Transformational Architecture for the Smart Grid
(June 2010) This keynote presentation was given by Wayne Longcore. A Simple and Flexible Specification for an Enterprise Architecture Practice (SATURN 2009)
(May 2009) presentation given at SATURN 2009, which took place in Pittsburgh, PA on May 4-7, 2009 This presentation describes a simple and flexible enterprise architecture practice employed by Sandia National Laboratories that is designed to help mitigate the tendency toward “too much information.” The practice provides enterprise architects with a framework and principles that guide their work and defines an overall process for enterprise architecture, the outputs of which are the following: as-is (baseline) and to-be (target) descriptions of business, information systems, and technology architectures; the interactions and alignments within and among these architectures; and a road map for transforming the enterprise from the baseline to the target state. The architecture descriptions identify the scope and bounds of the enterprise, characterize enterprise stakeholders and the strategic intent of the enterprise toward them, describe the current state of the enterprise, and recommend a future state that facilitates the realization of the enterprise strategic intent. The roadmap, in turn, defines a transition plan to guide progress toward the target architecture and provides methods to measure progress during the transition. The work products of enterprise architecture are intended to provide concise, relevant, timely, and accurate information to decision makers and program managers regarding the realization of the desired future state of the enterprise.

Bridging Systems and Software Architecture
(May 2009) presentation given at SATURN 2009, which took place in Pittsburgh, PA on May 4-7, 2009 The increasing complexity of large-scale software-intensive systems, along with well- documented software project failure rates, has brought attention to ensuring the architecting process provides value to the system development effort. As architecting processes become integrated into traditional engineering processes, it is important to seamlessly transition among enterprise, systems, and software architecture methods to realize the benefits of architecting to the overall system development. Ineffective transition has introduced the likelihood of increased cost and risk due to “disconnects” as architecture transitions through the various levels of decomposition. Raytheon has explored the relationship between systems architecture and software architecture in an effort to improve the capability to transition between these architecting activities and improve internal engineering processes. This paper will present Raytheon’s findings, including identification of key cost and risk drivers, recommendations for improving the capability to transition, and a discussion on the use of architecture methodologies to analyze the problem.

Quality-Attribute-Driven Software Architecture Reconstruction (SATURN 2005)
(April 2005) Architecture reconstruction is the process by which architectural views of an implemented system are obtained from existing artifacts. This presentation outlines research on architecture reconstruction that is driven by quality attribute analysis. The analysis typically occurs when existing systems hit their architectural boundaries caused by product growth or expansion scenarios. The information gathered during architecture reconstruction has to satisfy the information needs for these scenarios in order to provide reasoning during decision-making processes. The work is crucial for organizations that have to make architectural decisions about existing systems, or want to lower the adoption barriers for product lines by investigating the reuse of existing assets.

The ABACUS Architectural Approach to Computer-Based System and Enterprise Evolution (SATURN 2005)
(April 2005) The enterprise computer-based systems employed by the organisations of today can be extremely complex. Not only do they consist of countless hardware and software products from many varied sources, but they often span continents, piggybacking on public networks. These systems are essential for undertaking business and general operations in the modern environment, and yet the ability of organisations to control their evolution is questionable. The emerging practice of enterprise architecture seeks to control that complexity through the use of a holistic and top-down perspective. However, the toolsets already in use, are very much bottom-up by nature. To overcome the limitations of current enterprise architecture practices, the authors propose the use of the ABACUS methodology and toolset. The presenter concludes that by using ABACUS to analyse software and enterprise systems, architects can guide the design and evolution of architectures based on quantifiable non-functional requirements. Furthermore, hierarchical 3D visualisation provides a meaningful and intuitive means for conceiving and communicating complex architectures.

Gadfly: An Approach to Architectural-Level System Comprehension, The
(March 1996) Technology to support system comprehension tends to reflect either a “bottom-up” or “top-down” approach. Bottom- up approaches attempt to derive system models from source code, while top-down approaches attempt to map abstract “domain” concepts to concrete system artifacts. While both approaches have merit in theory, in practice the top-down approach has not yielded scalable, cost-effective technology. One problem with the top-down approach is that it is very expensive to develop domain models, and it is difficult to develop models that are sufficiently general to be applied to multiple systems (and hence amortize the development cost). This paper describes the Gadfly, an approach for developing narrowly-focused, reusable domain models that can be integrated and (re)used to aid in the process of top-down system comprehension. This paper was written by Paul Clements, Bob Krut, Ed Morris, and Kurt Wallnau.
