SEI Members, check your mailboxes and inboxes. The September 2009 Monitor has just been published. This month’s Monitor cover story highlights the new SEI website and the many members who offered valuable feedback by serving as early reviewers. Another story features CMMI Program Manager Mike Phillips discussing his team’s work on the development of CMMI Version 1.3, which is scheduled for release in November 2010. The SEI Member profile for September shines the spotlight on Larry McCarthy, a managing principal at global process partnerships who also serves on the CMMI Steering Group.
You should be receiving The Monitor via print or pdf this week! Check your mailboxes. If you don't receive it, please email membership@sei.cmu.edu.
SEI Membership is pleased to announce that SEI Members are eligible for a 15% discount off TSP Symposium 2009, which will be held September 21-24 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

One began constructing process improvement models when she was 17, hoping to reduce wait times in lift lines and predict avalanches. Another led the movement to combine the Capability Maturity Model Integration® (CMMI®) and Agile models. Another patented a unique approach to the Team Software Process® (TSP®) model.
All
three are the recipients of the Carnegie Mellon® Software Engineering
Institute (SEI) Member Awards for leadership in the fields of software
and systems engineering. The awards were presented at the SEPG
North America 2009 conference.
Jeff Dalton, CEO of Broadsword Solutions, was awarded the Outstanding Representative Award. Dalton, a leading advocate for combining Agile and CMMI, co-authored an SEI Technical Report on the topic, CMMI or Agile: Why Not Embrace Both? Dalton, a classically-trained musician at the Peabody Institute of Music, once played bass with the Madrid and Mexico City symphonies. He is a frequent present at SEPG and in 2008, his presentation “Notes from the Blogosphere”, was voted best-in-show by attendees.
Brad Hodgins, a TSP Coach and Instructor at the Naval Air Systems Command, was awarded the Outstanding Contributor Award. According to SEI Member Jeff Schwalb, who works with Brad and nominated him, Brad’s team applied and combined software process improvement models, techniques and tools like PSP, TSP, Software CMM and the Earned Value Management System. Through his work, Hodgins began noticing trends in certain actions that TSP coaches needed when working with teams that implement TSP. He constructed them into a model that is used by TSP coaches across the organization.
Barbara Hilden, founder and CEO of the consulting firm Process Improvement for the 21st Century (PI-21), was awarded the Outstanding Advocate Award. When she was 17, and working at ski resorts near her home in Utah, Barbara would construct performance and prediction models to reduce the wait times in life lines and also try to predict where avalanches might occur. She taught and developed courses in software and systems engineering methodologies at numerous universities before working in industry including at Unisys, where she led process improvement efforts. She founded PI-21 in 2003.
“It is such an honor to honor these individuals who have made such a difference in the software and systems engineering community,” said Connie Sapienza-Acker, manager of customer relations at the SEI, in her opening remarks at the assembly.
The three were nominated for the awards by their peers in the SEI Member Community, a global network spanning 36 countries of leaders in the fields of software and systems engineering. For more information, email membership@sei.cmu.edu.

SEI Member Dr. Stefan Ferber, director of the process department in corporate research and advanced engineering at Robert Bosch GmbH in Germany, is an Architecture Tradeoff Analysis Method (ATAM) Lead Evaluator and has been working with the ATAM since 2000, well before the SEI even began certifying individuals in this field. He also serves as the Bosch-SEI Business Point of Contact, specifically for Capability Maturity Model® Integration (CMMI® ) topics.
His involvement with software architecture started in 2000 when Bosch adopted the SEI Framework for Software Product Line PracticeSM for several automotive platforms. Ferber became interested in the ATAM— a scenario-based software architecture review method that uses business goals to evaluate the quality of software architecture—because software was becoming increasingly linked to ensuring the quality of embedded systems in vehicles.
