Announcing a One-Day Seminar, Leveraging Commercial Products: A Systems Integration Approach

This seminar will be held on September 22, 2005, at the Furama City Centre Hotel, Singapore.

Seminar Abstract: Industry and government organizations are escalating their use of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products and other pre-existing components in business- and mission-critical systems. Attempts to build, field, and evolve COTS-based systems through the use of traditional engineering and management processes continue to be disappointing; different skills, changed roles and responsibilities, and new processes are required.

Real-world examples and attendee discussions form the basis of this one-day seminar. It provides participants with an overview of the challenges in building systems using COTS products, addresses the implications that these challenges impose on software-intensive system development and maintenance processes, and introduces the Evolutionary Process for Integrating COTS-based systems (EPIC) as a process designed to address the challenges of COTS products. The seminar also discusses the implications of COTS-based systems for organizations applying the CMMI.

Intended Audience: The seminar is intended for engineers, project managers, and process methodologists who are or will need to adapt their current engineering and management practices to leverage the COTS marketplace.

Seminar Leader: Lisa Brownsword is a ten-year veteran at the SEI where she is a senior member of the technical staff working in the Integration of Software-Intensive Systems (ISIS) Initiative. She is currently investigating the enablers and barriers to large-scale system-of-systems integration and interoperability. As a member of the COTS-Based Systems (CBS) Initiative, Brownsword co-developed EPIC and has delivered numerous management and technical courses, workshops, and presentations at professional conferences and to customers around the world.

Brownsword founded and was the inaugural conference chair for the International Conference on COTS-Based Software Systems (ICCBSS) and continues to serve in a variety of roles. As a former consultant at Rational Software Corporation, she provided mentoring to managers and technical practitioners in the use of spiral and architecture-centered development, object technology, and the Rational development environment.
