13th SEI Software Engineering Workshop for Educators Expands Scope

April 27, 2016—Building on the twelve-year success of the Architecture-Centric Engineering Workshops for Educators (ACE), the SEI will this year expand the workshop’s scope to embrace the entire field of software engineering. To reflect this growth, the event is now called the SEI Software Engineering Workshop for Educators. The SEI will host the workshop from August 2 to 4, 2016, at its Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, headquarters. The workshop fosters an exchange of ideas among educators whose curricula include the subjects spanning software engineering.

Facilitating this year’s workshops are the SEI’s Grace Lewis and Robert Nord. Lewis serves as deputy lead of the SEI’s Advanced Mobile Systems Initiative and principal investigator for the Tactical Computing and Communications research project. Her interests include mobile computing, cloud computing, software architecture, and service-oriented architecture. Nord conducts research in software architecture, agile at scale, and technical debt. He is a co-author of the books Applied Software Architecture and Documenting Software Architectures: Views and Beyond.

“The workshop is one of the highlights of my work at the SEI,” said Lewis. “It is a great experience to get educators that are passionate about what they do and provide them with tools for their courses. They leave the workshop with knowledge and shared artifacts that they can take to their students.”

The three-day workshop will feature two days of SEI courses. This year’s courses cover big data and service-oriented architecture design. Day three is devoted to invited talks and group sessions, facilitated by SEI team members, where participants share experiences, ideas, and tangible artifacts for introducing software engineering topics into the college curriculum. Steve Chenoweth of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana, attended the workshop last year. “It's a unique opportunity," said Chenoweth, "getting to meet with other educators in this special SEI environment, where we get guidance from people leading the charge in industry and from the authors of the books we use.”

“The workshop presents an excellent forum for participants to learn and to interact with colleagues from a growing community of software engineering educators,” said Nord. “By expanding the workshop beyond software architecture, we expect a more diverse exchange of ideas and viewpoints that can help inform and energize the approaches participants bring to their course subject matter.” 

The workshop is open to any accredited, college-level educator. In lieu of an entry fee, attendees are expected to bring a shareable artifact   to the workshop.
