April 15, 2011—Although CMMI and Six Sigma are different types of improvement initiatives, they have many connections and can be integrated when implemented. The SEI worked with participants in government and industry to develop a body of knowledge (BoK) with a focus on the intersection of CMMI and Six Sigma. This intersection was defined as the CMMI goals and practices that can be met using a Six Sigma method or technique, and the Six Sigma methods and project lifecycles that can benefit from CMMI process areas and practices.

The SEI has produced a free tool you can download to explore the BoK.

This tool allows you to

• select a CMMI process area, specific goal, or generic goal  and view associated Six Sigma tools and techniques
• navigate a list of Six Sigma tools and techniques linked to CMMI process areas
• view a table relating the roadmap phases of DMAIC and DFSS to CMMI. This table also includes applicable Six Sigma tools with short descriptions and references
• view a list of references with web links
