April 2, 2010—In a new white paper, John Goodenough asserts that current practice is inadequate for developing justified confidence in software’s impact on system reliability. The inadequacies are especially obvious when dealing with systems of systems.
Goodenough provides examples from a summit on reliability, availability, maintainability, and testability (RAM-T) for a large system of systems. He finds that developers would benefit from "guidance on how to assess (and improve) software’s contribution to platform reliability and availability." Finally, he provides recommendations for further exploration of software's contribution to system and system of systems reliability.
