Note from the Editor
Better late than never. I’d like to wish you all a very Happy New Year! I hope that you were able to get some rest over the holidays and you are now back in full swing and ready for all of the good things that 2004 has to offer! Here are some of what we believe to be good things happening so far...
TP Program to Be Known as “SEI Partner Network”
At SEPG 2004 (March 8 - 11, Orlando, Florida), we will announce a new name for an important SEI activity. What has been known as the SEI Partner Program will now be called the SEI Partner Network, and SEI Partners will simply be called "SEI partners." The SEI Partner Program began more than a decade ago as a small, tightly knit community of organizations that were licensed to deliver a single SEI course. Today, the SEI Partner Network is a global source for numerous SEI services and training. The name change is a milestone that marks the success and growth of this network over the past decade.
We acknowledge and thank all of the SEI partners for their important work in support of the SEI mission and for making this milestone possible.
Welcome, Richard Cox Thank You, David White |
Code of Professional Conduct Project Continues
In an effort to improve the SEI Partner Network and Authorization and Certification Programs, we have initiated a quality project. Phase 1 of this project is to develop a code of professional conduct that will apply to all partners and authorized individuals, including those
who are SEI employees. Our vision for the code is that it will
1) define the minimum acceptable behaviors to which we can hold one another accountable
2) define the consequences for violating those standards.
The link to the most recent draft of this code of conduct is now available for SEI Partners and authorized individuals to review at http://www.sei.cmu.edu/collaborating/partners/. You may review the comments that have been submitted. Links to the first
draft and the responses to the previous comments can also be found there.
First Annual SEI Partner Network Directory and Guide to Services to Be Presented at SEPG
The SEI will release the first annual SEI Partner Network Directory and Guide to Services at SEPG 2004. This guide will provide information to prospective customers on each SEI service that is currently available through the SEI Partner Network and will include directory listings for
every current SEI partner as of February 20, 2004. Be sure to stop by the SEI booth to get your copy of the directory. If you are not able to join us in Orlando, a copy of the directory will be sent to you.
Reminder for Partners Who Market Courses Through a Third Party
If you are planning to use a 3rd party to market SEI authorized courses, please note that your license agreement states that you may not distribute the course description to 3rd parties without permission from the SEI.
To obtain the appropriate permission on behalf of the 3rd party organization to distribute the course description from the SEI, you will need to submit your request via this permission form.
The 3rd party marketing organization should use the following language with the course description:
“[Insert name of third party], in collaboration with [Insert name of SEI Partner], is arranging the Software Engineering Institute's authorized [Insert name of SEI course] course.
[Insert date, place, etc.]
This training will be delivered under [Insert name of SEI Partner]’s license agreement with the Software Engineering Institute.”
Reminder for Partners Using a 3rd Party to Reproduce Course Materials
If you are planning to use a 3rd party organization to reproduce SEI course materials for your offerings of the SEI authorized courses, please note that the license agreement states that you may not distribute the course materials to 3rd parties (non-students) without permission from the SEI.
To obtain the appropriate permission on behalf of a 3rd party to reproduce the course materials from the SEI, you will need to submit your request via this permission form.
SEI Offerings of Courses in Europe
The SEI and the ESPI Foundation have mutually cancelled the brokering agreement for SEI courses in Europe. The SEI appreciates the transition support of the ESPI Foundation.
The SEI will continue to offer courses in Europe. Details of the course offerings can be found on the SEI Education and Training Web site at http://www.sei.cmu.edu/products/courses/course-by-date.html.
Build Your Credentials with an SEI Certificate or Certification Program
Since 1984, the SEI has been identifying, developing, and advocating practices for designing high-quality software and protecting networked systems.
To help you put these practices in place at your organization, we have developed the SEI Credentials Program. The seven certificate programs and one certification offered guide you through a series of courses chosen to help you develop your expertise in a specific area of work,
including computer security incident handling, software engineering process management, and software architecture design. Descriptions of these programs can be found at http://www.sei.cmu.edu/credentials. For more information on the SEI Credentials Program, contact

Congratulations to Rich Pethia and the CERT/CC Team
At the CERT Coordination Center(CERT/CC) 15th anniversary celebration held in Oakland on December 11, 2003, Carnegie Mellon University President Jared Cohon congratulated the team on its many accomplishments throughout its history.
In addition to the anniversary celebration, SEI Acting Director Angel Jordan and Chief Operating Officer Clyde Chittister announced that Pethia had been awarded the position of SEI fellow.
To be selected as an SEI fellow, an individual must have made a significant contribution to the SEI technology-transition mission, provided leadership and vision in affecting widespread adoption and improvement, been active in professional software engineering activities, and
provided leadership in SEI activities.
OCTAVE Recognized in The Wall Street Journal
The following is an excerpt from "Keep Hackers Out,"
an article in the Wall Street Journal on November 17, 2003:
"Poor computer security affects networked companies and organizations as well as home computer users who connect to the Internet. The CERT/CC has received over 114,000 reports of networks that have been compromised by outsiders. The CERT/CC's Operationally Critical Threat, Asset and Vulnerability
Evaluation can help companies assess their levels of security risk; the CERT/CC will also participate in Carnegie Mellon University's CyLab program to ensure safety and privacy for all computer users."
Special Premium Discount offer from Addison-Wesley
SEI partners can receive a special premium discount for SEI course books that will be used for promotional use only such as providing the books as a part of course materials and not for resale to their customers or course attendees. The discount will include 49% off the price
of 500 units of each title ordered. When placing book orders, the partner should work directly with Carolyn Coscia at Addison Wesley:

SEI and ESI Announce First Latin American SEPG Conference
The SEI and the European Software Institute (ESI) are pleased to announce the first Software Engineering Process Group--Latin America Conference (SEPG LA), to be held November 8-10, 2004 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
SEPG LA 2004 is the first in a series of annual conferences that will rotate through select Latin American countries. Like the SEPG Conferences in North America and Europe, SEPG LA is geared toward professionals who are interested in systematic improvement of people, process,
and technology in organizations where software is a key contributor to business success.
More information about SEPG LA can be found at

SCAMPI Lead Appraisers and CMMI Instructors Annual Workshop
The SCAMPI LA and CMMI Instructor annual workshop was held on November 4-6, 2003 in Marriott Crystal City, Arlington, Virginia with 130 lead appraisers and instructors attending. For information on the presentations and the break-out sessions at this workshop, please see http://www.sei.cmu.edu/events/ .
First Annual Team Software Process User Group Meeting
The SEI held the First Team Software Process (TSP) User Group ("TUG") meeting on September 29-30, 2003 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This conference provided a forum for the free exchange of ideas and implementation methodology for TSP, and afforded a unique opportunity to meet with the sponsors, developers, and users of TSP, as well as those offering TSP training, coaching, and implementation assistance. The primary objective of this conference was to share experiences and lessons learned by TSP users, SEI Partners, and developers.
