From the Editor

Dear Colleagues,
As summer approaches and you plan your vacations/holidays, we wanted to let you know of all the exciting SEI Partner Network activities that have taken place and are being planned. We like to think of this newsletter as a catalyst for reminding you and your authorized people what is happening in the SEI Partner Network, as well as a reminder of the responsibilities. Please be sure to share this newsletter with the SEI-authorized individuals within your organization and other interested parties.

SEI Pioneer Watts Humphrey Wins Medal,
Urges Developers to Strive for Better Code

Watts Humphrey, an SEI fellow who developed the basis for the Capability Maturity Model for Software (SW-CMM), as well as developed the Personal Software Process and Team Software Process technologies, received the prestigious National Medal of Technology from President Bush on March 14, 2005. The National Medal of Technology is awarded to technological innovators whose work contributes to the nation's economic, environmental, and social well-being. For more information, see the SEI press release about Watts Humphrey’s achievement.

Humphrey is also featured in the May 9 edition of Business Week as an industry insider. In the article, Humphrey discusses the importance of a commitment to quality and how TSP and CMMI continue to transform the practice of software engineering.

New Business Point of Contact Information

If your organization has recently changed its business point of contact (BPoC), please be sure to let the SEI know by sending email to partner-info@sei.cmu.edu and be sure that the new BPoC receives the CD-ROM of the SEI Partner Network Identity Guidelines.

Interactive Online Partner Directory to be released June 2005

The SEI Partner Network will release the first part of our new Online Partner Directory (OLPD) June 2005. In June, the Partner Business Point of Contact (BPoC) will be able to update and maintain the Partner information (with approval from the Partner Network administrator). The BPoC will be sent an email in June with the URL, a username and a password to get into the system. This will be the only way to make or accept changes for sponsorship of SEI-authorized individuals for your organization.

For the potential customer who may want to contract an SEI Partner, the OLPD will provide a search function. We expect to make the searchable directory available to the public in early July 2005. The information in the OLPD will include a Partner statement, contact information, language fluencies, office locations, and a list of geographic regions where the Partner has provided SEI services.

Sunsetting SW-CMM December 2005

On December 31, 2005, CMM for Software will be sunset. Current Partners for the Introduction to SW-CMM training retain the ability to deliver a customer on-site training as long as their license agreements are maintained. December 31, 2005, SCAMPI will be the single appraisal method of choice; therefore, all existing CBA IPI Lead Assessors and Lead Evaluators should consider transitioning to SCAMPI Lead Appraisers. Use of SCAMPI to appraise against the SW-CMM will also be sunset December 31, 2005.

Reminder: Sunsetting of CMMI Staged Representation Course and CMMI Continuous Representation Course as of December 2005

SEI-authorized and candidate instructors shall successfully complete required upgrade training before receiving authorization to deliver Introduction to CMMI (Staged and Continuous) course. Partners shall ensure that its SEI-authorized instructors complete this upgrade training. After December 31, 2005, any offerings of the separate representation courses are not allowed and will not be recognized as SEI-authorized. The last planned upgrade class will be held during the October 2005 Instructor Workshop.

New SEI Certification Program

The SEI is developing a family of professional certifications for software developers, practitioners, instructors, and coaches who apply the Personal Software Process (PSP) and Team Software Process (TSP) methodologies to their work. Each professional certification within the family is characterized by specific entry and maintenance criteria. For example, the SEI-Certified PSP Developer certification will require candidates to pass an examination based on the PSP Body of Knowledge (BOK). This document outlines the core knowledge and skill competencies required by software engineering professionals who are proficient in the use of PSP methodologies. You can view the PSP BOK here. Development of the SEI-Certified PSP Developer examination is scheduled for the summer of 2005.

Watch for news and updates about the SEI Professional Certifications in the SEI's quarterly journal, news@sei.

Looking Back: SEI SEPG 2005 Conference, SEI SEPG 2005 Annual Meetings

SEI SEPG 2005 Conference
The SEI SEPG 2005 conference held in March in Seattle, Washington, USA, was a great success. Commercial industries represented 55% of the 2100 attendees and 7% were academic representatives. The other attendees were U.S. government industries and agencies. Engineers (51%), managers (27%), directors (19%), and sales (3%) are the occupations represented at the conference. We would like to thank all of you who participated and hope to see you in Nashville, Tennessee in March 2006.

SEI SEPG 2005 Annual Meetings
The SEI Partner Annual Meetings held at the Software Engineering Process Group Conference (SEPG 2005) were well attended with 158 present for the SW-CMM, CMMI, and SCAMPI meeting, and 65 present for the TSP and PSP meeting.

The SW-CMM, CMMI, SCAMPI Annual Meeting presentation, and the TSP and PSP Annual Meeting presentation are both available in portable document format (PDF).
