Description

Software Product Line Acquisition - A Companion to A Framework for Software Product Line Practice is an acquisition-oriented companion to the framework adding acquisition specific information. The result is a description of the technical and management areas in which an organization must be competent to successfully acquire and field a product line of software or software-intensive systems.

The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) has successfully launched a product line based on the RangeWare asset base for open-air Department of Defense ranges for training, testing and evaluation. Currently NUWC is expanding the coverage of its assets in terms of new services as well as applying the assets to new systems. The Acquisition Support Program (ASP) is sponsoring a pilot for applying the Companion. To mature its product line practices. NUWC has initiatives in several practice areas that are supported by the Companion. Success in these practice areas is essential to the continued viability of the product line and to meet the needs of range systems. This pilot will help determine whether specific product line practice areas captured in the Companion address the needs of NUWC and the needs of the general acquisition community.
