Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute (SEI) research and development (R&D) activities focus on addressing critical software and cybersecurity needs of the U. S. Department of Defense (DoD).
The SEI applies a strategy of create-apply-amplify to assure continual innovation in its development and delivery of usable tools, technologies, and practices. In this R&D portfolio approach, the SEI creates new solutions or identifies and improves emerging ones found in academia and other government R&D facilities. Then, the SEI validates those solutions in real-world government and industry contexts, through prototyping and pilot programs. Finally, the SEI works with the software and cybersecurity communities to accelerate widespread adoption.
The SEI research and engineering staff includes recognized leaders in acquisition, software quality, software assurance and cybersecurity. Their work concentrates on development improvement in these areas:
software engineering, including issues software system design, development, integration, testing, and sustainment
cybersecurity, including activities relating to the security of networks and computers, with a strong focus on deployable tools, methods, and workforce development
assurance, comprising a combination of techniques in software engineering and security that focus on a "designed-in" approach
DoD critical component capabilities, such as cyber-physical systems, high performance computing and parallel algorithms, validated high-performance data structures, networking, and autonomous operations
In addition to expert staff, the SEI possesses organizational capabilities that enable effective R&D, including
prototyping of software and hardware/software systems
extensive data and access based on a network of trust relationships in the DoD and its supply chain built over more than 20 years
a collaborative network developed as a DoD Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) and through affiliation with Carnegie Mellon University, a world-class R&D university
