Leverage CMMI and Six Sigma Together to Cut Costs and
Reduce Cycle Time

Even highly effective businesses face challenges in
this tough economy. One response to these challenges is to become
even more effective through getting more from their improvement
initiatives (including technologies, reference models, and
standards). CMMI and Six Sigma: Strategies for Joint
Implementation, a new course from the Carnegie Mellon Software
Engineering Institute (SEI), provides organizations with
strategies to appropriately leverage Six Sigma and CMMI
initiatives. Harmonizing these initiatives can eliminate costly
overlaps in technologies and reduce the time that it takes to
    develop new products.

"Texas Instruments had recruited Roger Bate to
establish a software engineering group," recalled Larry Druffel,
who was SEI director and CEO from 1986 to 1996. "Roger would
recruit and train people in good software engineering practices for
TI. And then they often were transferred to other TI programs. I
recall visiting him to discuss TI software engineering practices,
and he chuckled and said, 'A lot of my engineers get recruited away
by other TI programs. That's all part of my strategy. I want them
to do that, but I fight them every time, so they won't catch on.'
That was the way he seeded good software engineering throughout
TI." Bate's later work with the Software Engineering Institute was
instrumental in seeding best practices for software engineering
worldwide. Bate, who was a former chair and member of the SEI Board
of Visitors, and a senior member of the technical staff and, later,
a visiting scientist at the SEI, died March 18, 2009, in McKinney,
   Texas. He was 86.

SEI Seeks Organizations to Pilot New Performance Improvement Concept

The SEI is piloting an exciting new approach to
improving performance. This new concept is designed to make it faster
and easier to improve your software engineering processes. Combining
the best of CMMI, the Team Software Process, and Six Sigma measurement
and analysis techniques, this approach helps organizations accelerate
pace of performance improvement, including significantly decreasing
cost, increasing quality, and improving on-time delivery. To learn more
about contracting with the SEI to introduce this
new performance improvement concept into your organization,

The Software Engineering Institute is now planning
Version 1.3 of the CMMI Product Suite. CMMI Version 1.3 will include
updates to the models in all three constellations: Development,
Acquisition, and Services. These updates will synchronize the
architecture and content of the models as members of the CMMI Product
Suite and clarify the high maturity material in all three
models. Change requests submitted before March 2, 2009 for CMMI-DEV,
CMMI-ACQ, and CMMI-SVC will be reviewed as part of this project. As
plans are finalized, more information about CMMI Version 1.3 will
become available on the SEI website. The date of the Version 1.3
release is not yet definite, but is likely in 2010. If you wish to
submit a change request for a CMMI model, download and complete the
appropriate form and email it to cmmi-cr@sei.cmu.edu. For more
information about the CMMI User Feedback process and change request
forms, see

SEI Publishes Results of Five Research and Development Projects

The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) annually
undertakes several independent research and development (IRAD)
projects. These projects serve to (1) support feasibility studies
investigating whether further work by the SEI would be of potential
benefit and (2) support further exploratory work to determine whether
there is sufficient value in eventually funding the feasibility study
work as an SEI initiative. Projects are chosen based on their
potential to mature and/or transition software engineering practices,
develop information that will help in deciding whether further work is
worth funding, and set new directions for SEI work. This report
describes the IRAD projects that were conducted during fiscal year
2008 (October 2007 through September 2008).

Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute Joins Multicore Association

A multicore processor combines two or more
independent cores (normally a CPU) into a single package
composed of a single integrated circuit. The increasing
availability of processors with many computing cores requires
better approaches to developing and deploying concurrent
software. As members of the Multicore Association (MCA), members
of the technical staff at the SEI are participating in the MCA's
Multicore Programming Practices (MPP) working group. This
working group is developing a multicore-software programming
guide for industry. Participation in the working group will
allow the SEI to represent the needs and interests of its
stakeholders in the U.S. Department of Defense, government, and
industry and communicate the working group's findings to
      those stakeholders.

CERT Secure Coding Standards Improve the Quality and Security
of Commercial Software Products

Society's increased dependency on networked software
systems has been matched by an increase in the number of attacks
aimed at these systems. The attacks--directed at governments,
    corporations, educational institutions, and individuals--have
resulted in financial loss, the loss and compromise of sensitive
data, system damage, and lost productivity. These attacks are
most often enabled by comMon, software vulnerabilities. To address
this issue, the CERT Secure Coding Initiative, part of the CERT
Program at Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering
Institute (SEI), has released The CERT C Secure Coding
Standard. This book, written by Robert C. Seacord and published
by Addison-Wesley, provides best practices to reduce, or
eliminate, vulnerabilities before software is released by
vendors. Training on the standard will be delivered by the SEI
    and its partners.
