Tokoro founded Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc. in 1988 and led it to be one of the world's renowned research laboratories in the computer science arena. He invented Acknowledging Ethernet and led the development of ConcurrentSmalltalk, Muse OS (later called Aperios), mobile internet protocol VIP, and real-time protocol RtP.
