We are in the planning stage for our Fiscal Year 2012 research efforts and welcome your interest, feedback, and inquiries about collaboration. Please contact us at info@sei.cmu.edu with "Mobile" in the subject line to begin a discussion.
Tentative FY12 Research Agenda
Objective: Getting the right information, in a comprehensible format, to warfighters at the tactical edge in their time of need.
Challenges
- Warfighters cannot get the relevant information they need at the time they need it.
- The closer they get to combat, the fewer computation, energy, and network resources they have available.
- Capabilities delivered to mobile devices at the edge do not keep pace with evolving mission needs.
Research Approach and Innovations
- improved quality and relevance of information at the edge
– integrate real-time and other contextual information from
individual warfighters, nearby warfighters, and remote systems
- resource optimization for mobile platforms at the edge
– application of individual and unit context to optimize energy
consumption for the entire unit
– computation offloading to mobile peers to increase computing
capability of a unit
- user-controlled system adaptation at the edge
– edge-based, rapid adaptation and validation of fielded systems to
meet emerging mission needs
Impact to DoD
“Getting information to the tactical edge and to the Soldier at their time of need, in a format that shows them what they want is our grail."
-- LTC Greg Motes, Chief, Information Dissemination Management Division, School of Information Technology, Fort Gordon, GA
