PSP Instructor Training

Upon completing this five-day course, students will be authorized to use the SEI Team Software Process (TSP) course suite to teach the PSP for Engineers, PSP Fundamentals, PSP Advanced, Introduction to Personal Process, Leading a Development Team, and TSP Executive Strategy Seminar courses to others in their organizations.

The PSP Instructor Training course focuses on how to teach the PSP and put it into practice and introduces the concepts of the Team Software Process. Specific course objectives include understanding how to effectively teach the PSP to others, how to grade student assignments and analyze resulting data, and the role of a change agent in introducing the PSP into an organization.

Days 1-4, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Before registering for this course, participants must
  • successfully complete PSP for Engineers I and II, or PSP Fundamentals and PSP Advanced, taught by the SEI or an SEI-authorized PSP instructor
    • For those students who have taken PSP for Engineers I: Planning and PSP for Engineers II: Quality, or PSP Fundamentals and PSP Advanced, from an SEI-authorized instructor, please note: the instructor must submit student data to the SEI 60 days in advance of the PSP Instructor Training course.
    • Attending the TSP Executive Seminar or Leading a Development Team does not fulfill this requirement.
  • be recommended by their SEI-authorized instructor
  • be an SEI-Certified PSP Developer
  • have signed the Code of Professional Conduct for SEI Services
  • be sponsored by an SEI Partner for the TSP Product Suite
  • have attended PSP for Engineers, or PSP Fundamentals and PSP Advanced, within the past 18 months
  • have teaching or public speaking experience
  • be proficient in both spoken and written English
Required Equipment

Students must bring with them the following portable computing equipment:

  • Laptop computer with
    • 500 megabytes or greater of free hard disk space
    • Microsoft Office with Access 2003, SP2 (or more recent)
    • Programming language development environment (compiler, editor, etc.)
    • Zip file capability
    • CD-ROM or memory stick
  • a simple 4-function calculator

Please note: Beta versions of Microsoft Office products are not supported.



Pre-Course Work

Students should review and follow the PSP IT course prerequisites and the PSP authorization process. The process for becoming a SEI-authorized PSP Instructor begins with the completion of the PSP for Engineers, or PSP Fundamentals and PSP Advanced, course taught by the SEI or an SEI-authorized PSP Instructor. Then students must successfully pass a screening of their PSP for Engineers, or PSP Fundamentals and PSP Advanced, course work to be accepted into the PSP Instructor Training course. Students must complete the PSP Instructor Training course within 18 months of taking the PSP for Engineers, or PSP Fundamentals and PSP Advanced, courses. After becoming officially registered, students should prepare for this course by reviewing their own data. During the course, the students will prepare a brief presentation of a PSP for Engineers, or PSP Fundamentals and PSP Advanced, course module for the rest of the class.

Students are given a notebook and a CD-ROM during the course. Additionally, students receive course notebooks, instructor guides, text books and other supporting materials for courses in the PSP course suite.
