Rear Admiral (retired) Edward H. Deets, III is the first director of the Software Solutions Division (SSD). SSD innovates to provide competitive advantage to the Department of Defense, federal government and industry, assuring the quality, timeliness, trust, and affordability of current and future software-reliant systems. This is done by advancing interdisciplinary science and technology, delivering solutions, and enabling widespread adoption of knowledge and practice.
Prior to assuming this position Deets served as deputy director in the CERT Division. CERT anticipates and solves the nation’s most challenging cybersecurity problems. It applies a holistic approach from secure coding, secure software engineering, and resilience, to workforce development, malware detection, attack mitigation, and resolution.
Deets joined the SEI after retiring from over 30 years in the U.S. Navy. Most recently he was the commander of Naval Network Warfare Command where he oversaw Navy network, space, communications, cryptologic, and cyber operations. During his career he earned designation as a cryptologic officer and information warfare officer. He served aboard numerous ships and shore commands in multiple theaters of operation integrating information, intelligence, and cyber capabilities. He was a leader in the evolution of cyber into a primary Navy warfare area.
He is a graduate of Duke University and a distinguished graduate of the National War College. He was commissioned through the Duke NROTC program.
