Article

January 17, 2020—The Conference on Software Engineering Education and Training (CSEE&T) recently announced that Pierre Bourque has been named the recipient of the 2020 Nancy Mead Award for Excellence in Software Engineering Education. The award will be presented at CSEE&T, to be held in Munich from July 29-31.

The award, which is named after longtime staff member and SEI Fellow Nancy Mead,  honors an individual who has demonstrated outstanding contributions to software engineering education and training, as well as software engineering professionalism.

“Pierre’s leadership in the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge was an essential contribution towards establishing and furthering software engineering as a discipline. He was able to accomplish this while teaching, taking leadership positions at ÉTS, and contributing to the profession in many other ways,” said Mead. “This is a remarkable achievement.”

Bourque has been a faculty member since 2000 in the Department of Software and IT Engineering of the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) of the Université du Québec, where he teaches courses in software requirements. He is currently on sabbatical in industry at CGI after being dean of studies at ÉTS from 2013-2019. He was director of the ÉTS Master of Software Engineering Program from 2005 to 2013. He is also lead co-editor of the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK) V3 published in 2014 and was co-editor of the 2001 and 2004 versions. The SWEBOK Guide is a project of the IEEE Computer Society and is also recognized as an ISO/IEC Technical Report. It has been used extensively as a reference document in course and curricula development in software engineering.

Bourque was also an elected member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Computer Society from 2011 to 2016. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Ulster (Northern Ireland). Prior to his appointment at ÉTS, he was involved in software engineering, data modeling, and database design at the National Bank of Canada and the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM).
