CERT to Offer Training, Certificate for Insider Threat Vulnerability Assessors

Certificate Designed to Help Organizations Meet New Government Standards
Pittsburgh, Pa., June 24, 2015—The CERT Insider Threat Center at the Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute today announced a new Insider Threat Vulnerability Assessor (ITVA) Certificate to train individuals to assist in meeting upcoming federal government standards. Registration is now open for courses in both Pittsburgh, and Arlington, Va.
In September 2011, President Obama signed Executive Order 13587, Structural Reforms to Improve the Security of Classified Networks and the Responsible Sharing and Safeguarding of Classified Information. This Executive Order requires federal agencies that operate or access classified computer networks to implement insider threat detection and prevention programs. In addition, proposed changes to the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual (NISPOM) would require the same of contractors that engage with such federal agencies.
“Using the CERT-developed vulnerability assessment tool, trained individuals can help organizations gain a better understanding of their insider threat risk and an enhanced ability to identify and manage associated risks,” said Randy Trzeciak, technical manager of the CERT Insider Threat Center. “The assessment methodology assists organizations by measuring how prepared they are to prevent, detect, and respond to the insider threats. Organizations will have the ability to license the CERT Insider Threat Vulnerability Assessment tool for internal use or to assess other organization for potential vulnerabilities.”
ITVA Certificate training includes two online prerequisite courses and one classroom course. The certificate exam will be completed online.
The CERT Insider Threat Center also offers a certificate program for insider threat program managers and soon will offer a certificate for insider threat program evaluators.
