As organizations all over the world rush to reap the benefits of service-oriented architecture, the SEI has developed a full set of information and tools to help these organizations succeed with their SOA Implementations.
Companies that embrace service orientation can achieve interoperability and agility, preserving their investments in legacy systems and simplifying the deployment of new systems. While it is true that service orientation can revolutionize businesses, the rush to implement service-oriented systems has led to costly failures. When companies don’t have enough information about SOA or make the wrong technology choices, they begin anew or abandon their SOA efforts altogether. Just as costly is an attempt to implement service-oriented systems without sufficient skills and knowledge; if organizations do not have staff members who can confidently take charge of SOA efforts, they will continue to bear the unnecessary costs of outdated and unharmonious systems.
“Too often, organizations are in a hurry to make sweeping improvements, and they fall victim to myths about SOA—that it’s an off-the-shelf solution, that all of an organization’s legacy systems can be easily integrated into a SOA environment, that a particular vendor’s product is a solution for all of an organization’s IT problems,” said Grace Lewis of the SEI. “The reality is that building and managing large-scale service-oriented systems requires extensive work in integration, tailoring, and testing, which requires a firm understanding of SOA concepts.”
The newest addition to the SEI’s set of SOA resources aims to address organizations’ needs to develop skills and knowledge, as well as the necessity to align SOA adoption with organizational business strategy. The SEI SOA Architect Professional Certificate brings together software architecture and SOA courses to provide students with an understanding of SOA from foundation to implementation to maintenance. Geared toward current and aspiring software engineers, software architects, project managers, and technical managers as well as those charged with implementing service-oriented systems, the certificate provides an unbiased, technology-agnostic view of SOA. With engineers and managers who have a solid background in SOA, companies can make informed decisions about SOA that lead to success.
The certificate program requires the completion of a set of courses, beginning with an introduction to software architecture fundamentals, followed by an explanation of service-oriented principles, practices, and architectural tradeoffs. Students then learn about the challenges of migrating legacy systems to SOA environments as a system-modernization approach, as well as a technique for analyzing the feasibility of migration. The certificate path culminates with implementation guidance for architecture and design, SOA governance, security, and assurance of service-oriented systems.
“SOA certainly promises great improvements, and we’re eager for companies to adopt SOA. We are here to help those managers and engineers do it right,” said Lewis.
