Are SEI courses available via other distance learning?

The SEI currently offers several eLearning courses. Web-enabled distance learning courses about software architecture, service-oriented architecture, acquisition and information security are now available, and additional courses will be released in the coming months. SEI eLearning provides SEI courses at your convenience, at your location.

SEI eLearning courses provide expert instruction, exercises, assessments, and remediation to ensure an effective educational experience that is both cost-efficient and convenient for learners worldwide. Please visit the SEI eLearning page for more details.

Are SEI training courses academic courses?

Training courses provided by the SEI are not academic courses for academic credit toward a degree. Any certificates provided are evidence of the completion of the courses and are not official academic credentials.

Can I transfer to a different course or transfer to a different offering of the same course?

By sending a written request, registrants may transfer registration fees from one SEI course offering to another that occurs within 12 months. There is no charge for the first transfer if requested no less than three weeks before the course begins. Transfer requests received less than three weeks before the course begins and all subsequent transfers will be charged a $50 administrative fee. Can SEI instructors come to our site to conduct a course or workshop?

 Yes. All SEI courses can be delivered at your site. SEI on-site training can be a cost effective way to train a group of people at a place and time convenient to you. If you are interested in scheduling an SEI course at your location, email SEI Education and Training at or call 412-268 7622.

Can the training facilities accommodate someone with a disability or special
access needs?

 Carnegie Mellon University makes every effort to provide accessible facilities and programs for individuals with disabilities. To arrange accommodations/services, please contact the SEI by email, (, or telephone (412-268-7622) at least three weeks prior to the course start date. Carnegie Mellon may not be able to provide an accommodation without sufficient notice.

Do I qualify for academic pricing?

Academic pricing includes all employees and students of a US accredited academic/educational organization (university, college, institute).

Do I qualify for government pricing?

Government pricing includes all U.S. government employees (Federal, State, Local). This does NOT include government contractors.

Does the SEI accept wire transfer payments for courses? Where can I send them?

Does the SEI provide international invitation letters in accordance with visa guidelines?

In order to obtain an invitation letter to attend a public course at the SEI, please follow the guidelines below:

You must be registered and confirmed for an SEI public offering. Your registration course fee must be paid in full before an invitation letter can be issued

Send your request via email to and provide your full name, address, phone and fax number (we cannot express mail invitation letters to a PO Box). Please allow 2 to 3 weeks for processing.

We have been advised by the Carnegie Mellon Office of International Education that SEI students are to enter the US in B1 visitor status. They have based this advice on 22 CFR 41.31(b) (1) which states that business activities can include "conventions, conferences, consultations and other legitimate activities of a commercial or professional nature.” The Foreign Affairs Manual gives further guidance on the types of acceptable activities at 9 FAM 41.31 N8. Among the activities listed are "scientific, educational, professional, business conventions, conferences, or seminars."

The courses offered at the Software Engineering Institute are viewed as professional development courses. International participants in these courses have consistently entered the US in B1 status (or under the visa waiver program) without difficulty. The university administration believes that it is in our interest and the interest of our visitors and students to have a consistent approach to immigration matters with these programs.

How do I obtain an SEI Professional Certificate?

How do I request a replacement certificate of course completion?

If you require a replacement certificate of course completion for a course offered by the SEI, please submit your request to and provide your name at the time of the training, the course title, date, and location. If your SEI course was delivered by an SEI Partner, please contact the SEI Partner directly for a replacement certificate.

I registered for an SEI eLearning course—when can I expect to receive access to the course?

Please allow 2 business days to receive your SEI Learning Portal Username and Password via email. They will be sent to the email address provided on the registration form. To ensure receipt of your portal access instructions, please add to your safe sender list.


I'm registered for an SEI course, but I can't attend—can I send a substitute?

Registrants may send a qualified substitute to attend an SEI course (provided that the substitute meets all prerequisites) by submitting an email to

What are my privacy rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)?

Course participant records created at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) in connection with SEI education and training courses are strictly confidential and their protection is mandated under federal legislation known as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). What is your refund/cancellation policy?

The SEI will issue refunds (less a $75 administrative fee) for written cancellations received no less than three weeks before the course begins. All refunds are subject to a $75 administration fee. No refunds will be issued after the course begins. Refunds will not be given for courses missed due to acts of nature. Email cancellations to SEI Registration at or fax to 412-268-7401.

If payment was made online with a credit card, please include the credit card number and expiration date of card originally charged to expedite receiving a credit to your credit card. If the original credit card is no longer valid, the refund will be issued via check within 2 to 3 weeks.

What should I wear to an SEI training event?

 We recommend "business casual." You need not wear a suit. You should choose clothing that allows you to be comfortable participating in training at a place of business. Training room temperatures may be too cool for some participants, we suggest bringing a sweater.

Where should I stay while attending an SEI course in Pittsburgh or Arlington?

 The SEI has standard lodging recommendations for courses, workshops, and seminars held at SEI offices in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Arlington, Virginia. For training events at other locations, the SEI will enclose travel and lodging information with the confirmation email sent to registrants. Registrants are responsible for arranging their own travel and accommodations.
