Vision, Mission, Strategy, and Core Values

Vision

Leading the world to a software-enriched society

Mission

The SEI advances software engineering and related disciplines to ensure the development and operation of systems with predictable and improved cost, schedule, and quality.

Strategy

To achieve its mission, the SEI strategy is to openly engage a broad-based community with a focus on improving the effects of software in the world. We create usable technologies, apply them to real problems, and amplify their impact by accelerating broad adoption.

SEI Strategic Approach

Create
The SEI works with the research community to help create and identify new and improved practices. The SEI creates and identifies emerging or underused solutions to significant and pervasive software engineering problems and develops these solutions so that they can be applied by software developers and acquirers to improve their software engineering practices. The SEI enters into cooperative research and development agreements with industry and academia to test new and emerging technologies.

Apply
The SEI works with leading-edge software developers and acquirers to apply and validate the new and improved practices. Staff members help the DoD solve specific software engineering and acquisition problems by applying these practices. SEI direct support is funded through task orders for government work.

Amplify
The SEI works through the global community of software engineers to amplify the impact of the new and improved practices by encouraging and supporting their widespread adoption. The SEI works closely with DoD engineering organizations. In addition, the SEI offers continuing education courses based on matured, validated, and documented solutions, and licenses the packaging and delivery of new and improved technologies.

Core Values

The SEI’s core values are integrity, excellence, and impact.

These core values are the foundation of everything we do at the SEI. They hold us together when the forces of change push and pull us this way and that.

Integrity
Integrity means we are open, honest, and fair. We respect others and keep our commitments. Our communication and actions reflect these values. We have no hidden agendas. We base our decisions on facts as far as we can know them. We hold ourselves accountable for adhering to these principles, and we expect and encourage others to hold us accountable, too.

Excellence
Excellence implies that we strive for excellence in everything that we do. We continually seek ways to improve. We understand that our business and technical environments are dynamic. Hence striving to be excellent includes a willingness to change. We constantly assess ourselves and learn what we need to master a situation, not just react to it. We learn from our mistakes and our successes and use that knowledge to help us improve.

Impact
Our impact is dependent on the measurable success the community has with the products of our work. We celebrate their success and are committed to using our skills to further that success.
