Tools and Methods

The Acquisition Support Program has developed solutions to the problems associated with software-intensive systems that help developers and acquirers improve their practices.

Acquisition

From the Acquisition Strategy Development Tool to a variety of classes and workshops, ASP is dedicated to applying and amplifying the methods and tools the SEI has developed since 1984.

A full list and description of the evaluations, reviews, and planning tools the Acquisition Support team can apply to your program is in the Consulting area of this section.

Risk Management

Through the Acquisition Support Program's affiliation with risk management activities at the SEI, we're also able to provide risk tools and methods to apply to any software project. These include traditional risk management tools (such as Continuous Risk Management and Software Risk Evaluation) and emerging tools such as the Mission Assurance Analysis Protocol and Mission Diagnostic Protocol. Learn more about them in the Risk and Opportunity Management section of the website.

Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) Based Systems

COTS-based systems focuses on improving the technologies and practices used for assembling previously existing components (COTS and other non-developmental items) into large software systems, and migrating existing systems toward CBS approaches.

The CBS approach changes the focus of software engineering from one of traditional system specification and construction to one requiring simultaneous consideration of the system context (system characteristics such as requirements, cost, schedule, operating and support environments), capabilities of products in the marketplace, and viable architectures and designs.
