Note: This course was formerly called Predictable Engineering with SAE AADL.
This course can be offered by arrangement at customer sites. In addition, it can be customized according to customer needs or bundled with consulting.
This two-day course provides an excellent opportunity to get a jump start on the use of the SAE Architecture Analysis & Design Language (AADL), a new international standard for embedded computer systems (SAE AS5506) on your projects. AADL supports predictable engineering through model-based analysis and integration of real-time applications on their target platforms. Fields of application include avionics and space applications, automotive electronics, ground based control systems, and industrial process control equipment.
The SAE AADL standard provides
- a common architecture modeling notation that helps organizations minimize training
- an XML/XMI interchange format that facilitates multiple use of models and interoperability with commercial and in-house tools
- UML compatibility profiles that extend UML with the real-time and embedded systems semantics of AADL
Organizations such as the U.S. Army, the SEI, Honeywell, Rockwell Collins, Boeing, General Dynamics, Airbus, Dassault, and the European Space Agency have participated in creating the standard and are actively investigating its incorporation into their practices. For more information about AADL and its use, please refer to www.aadl.info.
After attending this course, participants will understand the benefits of using AADL to
- architect real-time and embedded software systems with predictable results,
- analyze new and existing system architectures for potential systemic problems,
- predictably integrate systems through validated architecture models,
- perform model-based engineering early and throughout the system life cycle,
- apply multiple domains of architecture analysis such as scheduling, latency, resource utilization, power consumption, data quality, security, or safety to a single architecture specification

AUDIENCE
- engineers involved in architecting, evaluating, validating, testing or
integrating embedded and/or real-time and/or performance critical
computer systems
- program managers and technical leads interested in understanding the
potential risk, schedule and cost reduction impact of AADL
- commercial tool vendors interested in leveraging AADL to provide design, analysis or generation solutions
- researchers in academia, industry, and government looking for a precise
architectural specification language, extendable for new analysis and oriented to industrial applications
PREREQUISITES
- Familiarity with development and issues of real-time and embedded systems engineering
Bring your own laptop for some hands-on exercises with the open source AADL tool environment (OSATE).
TOPICS
- Overview of SAE AADL standard effort
- Model-based engineering with AADL
- Key elements of the SAE AADL standard
- An illustrated overview of the modeling concepts
- Pattern-based analysis of an avionics system
- Case studies of AADL in use
- Tool-based multi-fidelity analysis of AADL models
- An XML-based tool environment strategy
Course Materials Participants will receive a course notebook with copies of course slides and the SAE AADL standard document, AADL case study report, the Open Source AADL Tool Environment (OSATE), and sample AADL models.
